That is a great show, my first show was 10-14-89, 10-16 is Bobbys birthday with major Dark Star, was released a year or dso ago as "Nightfall Of Diamonds"!
i have to agree with davino, that whole tour in '89 from the warlock shows all the way till miami (2,000th show) was -the- tour to be on, within 18 months of this tour jerry will have dumped menacha/his daughter/being straight, and the the descent begins again. i think bruce hornsby kept things from falling apart, but after the bill graham requiem show 10/31/91, bruce split, and vince is cheesewhiz. and actually davino was right in his post way back when, go to etree.org, which i guess is partnered with archive.org now which is very cool, etree will have that whole tour in 89, most of them soundboards. don't buy their albums they are shite. download the miami 10/26/89 darkstar if you want to hear the dead freak out anyone within earshot of this recording http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=15997, it'll freak out your dog too. if you'd like to see the boys prove their jazz chops go to http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=17775 nassau 3/29/90 for some brilliant dueling with branford marsalis, the first time branford appeared with them, just amazing off the hook jams.
I agree ...and disagree. '89 was a VERY good year, and Branford was incredible. Their show at Alpine that year was a classic. but as for Bruce and Vince, I think you got it backwards. Bruce has always bored the shit out of me. He makes me want to STOP dancing. Vince, on the other hand, was electric. He had what bruce lacked -- creativity, sponteneity, and tons of energy. (mmm, how he could tickle those high keys) I don't know what the falling out was between him and the others, but I think letting him go was a HUGE mistake. I've never really been a fan since.
it was written up in a book or 2 that bruce was upset about jerry getting back on smack. there is an infamous night at madison square garden summer '91 where bruce confronts jerry during drums about the fact that he can tell something is amiss. jerry then comes out -after- drums/space and begins darkstar/playing in the band... it's like getting 2 second sets in one, altho it didn't manage to keep bruce. i think bill graham also had some pull in keeping bruce around, which became null right before he split. i don't wanna distract this lady from her finding music so i can't get into vince type posts, but anyhoooo i hope she finds some good stuff. i have super fond memories of seeing hornsby at the paradiso in amsterdam while on europe tour, we'd see him walking around amsterdam with his wife, coolest dude ever.
Vince was cast out of the Dead "Family" because in 1995, him and Jerry were doing smack together and the other bandmembers blame him for contributing to Jerrys death.
i asked pete sears one night in '96 or so when he was playing with zero why, since he was the most musical of all the people trying out (imho), he was passed up for the keyboard slot. he didn't respond with 'i can't sing', which is what i expected him to say. he said 'because i don't party'. i'm sure he wasn't refferring to smoking a doob now and then either. couple that with davino's comments and it looks like jerry had smack on the brain from the moment brent died. you can download 'vince welnick and the missing man formation' gig at the fillmore in '96 from archive.org, it is a great quality soundboard. i was there, and i don't remember anything about vince. i do remember thinking during st. steven that kimock is the only one qualified to do dead covers, which thank god came true for a few years.
I definitely agree with you there. Kimock is the man! I've met him a couple of times at SKB shows and he is so cool and down to earth. ...and not to harp on the Vince thing, but I met him too, and I found him to be the same way.
Found Old Renaissance Faire Grounds, Veneta, OR August 27, 1972 at gdlive.com. I've been looking for this show for ages. For some reason it's not at archive.com and gdlive has it list as unknown. Saw the date of the show and there it was. Anyway here's a link if anyone is interested. http://www.gdlive.com/dead/720827
Jimmy Buffet said many a time "the best guitarist in the world isn't worth it if he's an asshole." I think this applies to Vince. I know NO ONE in the players circle who likes him long term. I will hear "well, he can play..." but no nice comments. KT,I'm impressed you got Steve to talk! He's so reserved. Must have been a great night. My first conversation with him was pre-show at "nixon's farm" this dinky field outside of Lincoln, Neb. Zero was booked. Bobby Vega was sick as a dog and some local jerk was sitting in. The blazingly hot day cooled too much for those Cali boys, and we put tie-dye gloves on everyone. So Steve and I are figuring out which tips need to be cut off (all) and if he can still play with gloves. (one song) Now, face to face I'm shy. Painfully so. So was Steve (pre Jen). We talked about how scary the surge of people can be, I from the POV of representing a very different dyer and he from the "star" position. Steve and I have always managed a few words at a show. He once took me to task for not hugging correctly. Seems he'd been "shown how" at a show a couple nights before. "You do it this way," he said, repositioning our heads. "Heart to heart. I thought I knew how to hug for 44 years, but I got told I didn't." Ya know, he's right. It IS better heart to heart. But that might have been Chester's magic. Which incarnation did you see? (bassist) I've been catching Steve since 95. He had a couple GREAT NYE shows in Denver at our instigation. We even managed to be part of that lackluster DVD.
Thanks y'all for all the info. I'm checking ebay for deals and I've found some good ones so far. Europe '72 has really caught my interest so I'm trying to get a steal on that. My dream would be to get all 35 Dick's Picks. I'm trying one volume at a time. If I get some extra cash for my B-day I'm gonna try to pick up a box set. Thanks again. Flmkpr...I hear ya.
