Sorry think I posted this in the wrong thread... There we go. I'm going to be Bicycling around the west coast (maybe more) hopefully sometime befor sept. with any luck. I was curious as to anyone elses experiance biking to "get away from it all... After that I'm gonna need somewhere to go. anyone willing to help out a confused wondering young man? I've done the road trip in a van thing. so I'm wondering how much different it will be on a bicycle. Love, Peace, bicycle grease.
well, i did bike across the country. Seattle to Rye, New Hampshire. it took a total of 2 months. gave me a great perspective of life. the difference between a road trip and a bike trip is: well, the amount you will travel in one day. you won't travel as far as you would driving if your biking. but when you're driving, you miss out on so much. on my bike trip, i got to experience nature in all of its glory. from burning sunshine to lightning storms to hail to cold weather. i experienced it all. we biked through storms, we biked through nasty heat waves - when some days the heat index got up over 110 F degrees. you get to experience the joys of finding a camp spot. when you drive, you might pull into a hotel or maybe you find a campground. but biking, you might not be able to bike to a campground or hotel. so you get to find a nice camp spot for the night. we did it all - we found campgrounds, we stealth camped, we camped in parks, we even found an abandoned campground. food and water - you only have what you carry on your bike. you will go past stores and whatnot. but you can't rely on finding a store to buy food or water whenever you're hungry or thirsty. with driving, you're not anywhere near the amount you are when biking. so you are going to need a decent amount of food that will last a day or 2. PB&J's work great, so does tuna. powerbars are good; my favorites is Cliff Bars. fruit is good. i'd carry a camel back plus 2 water bottles. i'd also bring something that would clean water, like iodine and a small water filter. you never know when you're gonna have to find water. then all the people you might meet on your trip. we met some amazing people that allowed us to sleep in there homes or back yard. we met a Ranch family in Montana. we got to chop firewood and other stuff. i could go on, but i dont' want to bore you. biking is so different than drivng for a trip. i'd love to do a bike tour down the western coast. maybe in a few year's after school i'll be able to do it. any questions, i'll be pleased to try to answer.
Thanx for the advice. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm at all prepared for this. and perhaps i should find someone more experianced to try it with first befor venturing on my own.
just reading this post makes me want to bike across this great country of ours. thanks for the incentive.
to be totally honest...before the trip started, i had never biked more than 10 miles in a day. i never really had a good bike. i did do it with a group of 10 people, 2 were like chaperones or guides if you will. everyone except me was an experienced biker. so yea. tis been 4 years since the trip...i miss those guys so much...we had lots of fun.
