Has anyone visited this place or know someone who knew someone who lived there for any amount of time?

When we lived in a Catholic Worker community in Ontario, we met a woman who had been there and only had good things to say about Twin Oaks. I have always wanted to go to the Women's Conference but as yet have not gotten there...may be some day!

I went to the annual 'Communities Conference' held there several years ago, and that was after reading all of the books written about the place and talking to folks there. I was seriously considering applying for membership there, but my life went in a different direction. What did you want to know about it? I can tell you that it has a great, peaceful overall feeling, but it's not a classic 'hippie commune' if that's what you're looking for. It's a great example of alternative living though, and impressive in itself (the oldest successful 'intentional community' in the US).

Acorn struck me as very cool also (but not set up to handle many folk at the time I was there... quite a number of years ago). They strive to have a more... 'relaxed' atmosphere than Twin Oaks. :)

I've visited both Twin Oaks and Acorn. They are both really beautiful, very different from each other in that Acorn is just a tiny place while TO has like 100 members and many different buildings housing smaller groups. The annual communities conference is coming up and that really is a terrific opportunity not just to get a feel for twin oaks but to meet people from lots of communities and learn more.
