Poor people are not necessarily bums. although bums are almost always poor people. Even if I had a lot of money (which will never happen) I wouldn't buy shoes, or wear them most of the time. What about those who, like me, think it's a waste of money to buy shoes. No one really NEEDS them. I wish more people would walk barefooted on really hot cement and see how much it sucks so we could move forward in getting rid of it, cuz it's fucking everywhere and I hate it. I think sidewalks should be made of grass. Kind of off topic...
when i said poor people, i meant people begging for money and holding up signs saying they have no place to stay.... shoes arent a necessity? i dont know what the winters are like in idaho..but i wont walk outside my house in vermont without 2 pairs of socks and boots in the winter.....frostbite isnt something to scoff at, and is very, very dangerous and serious.
ok, well when I said poor people, I meant poor people in general, the ones who can't afford shoes. Not that it's a bad thing. You won't die without shoes, that's what I meant. And if you lived in a place that gets that cold, you could always just hybernate all winter. No one's scoffing at frostbite. I know all about it, I grew up in Alaska. Now THAT is cold. Not saying it's not cold where you're at, but I also know what cold is.
Wow! Look what I started. Thanks for all of the replies everyone. This has turned into a most interesting thread.
forcing a store to allow you to enter without shoes is much like all this anti smoking legislation now im no smoker, but i complelty disagree with forcing all public places, and work places to be smoke free (like we've done in ontario, and most parts of canada) if your a non smoker i can appreciate you don't want to go to a bar with lots of smoke...but forcing smokers to butt out to accomodate the small amount of non smoking bar patrons, should be illegal..if the demand is really there, then there would be tons of non smoking bars to accomodate those people... just like barefooting...it's their store, it's their rules...go somewhere else if you don't want to put shoes on...it's really that simple.
I think mayor Bloomberg banned smoking in all public places in NYC if I remember correctly. Someone who owned a bar tried to put an old school bus in the parking lot to accommodate smokers and got in trouble for that too.
yep, bloomberg did...though i hear they are offering exemptions to bars that can show financial hardship due to the smoking ban... there is also a restaurant in midtown i believe, that rents out a stretch limo for its customers to use as a smoking lounge..kinda silly, but whatever
I'm all for banning smoking everywhere in public places. Second-hand smoke is harmful (and it makes me want to barf), and there's no reason for myself or anyone else to suffer the consequences of someone else's bad habit. So props to Bloomberg.
i'm not a fan of second hand smoke, but it should be up to the bar owner to decide if his bar is smoking or not.... if its non smoking, tough luck to the smokers if its smoking, tough shit to the non smokers there are always plenty of bars in NYC.
in the town I live in we have had a smoking ban in "public" places for about 5 years ... places such as restaruants, bowling alleys, malls etc. I like the restaruant one ... there is no such thing as a non-smoking section because the smoke permiates everything and moves through the air and if you happen to get seated next to the smoking then you gotta put up with the stench of smoke and smoke coming over into your space.
