West Coast Anti-Capitalist Mobilization Against G8 Updated 07/06/2005 JULY 8TH: SAN FRANCISCO HOSTING PROTESTS AGAINST THE G8 In solidarity with the mobilization against the Group of Eight (G8) summit in Scotland, a call has been put out for a West Coast anti-war and anti-capitalist mass convergence. Police nowhere to be seen. Jul. 8th 9:39pm: Flags being burned at 16th and Mission. About 75 people present. Re-energized by flag burning about ready to march again. Report of arrest up 16th street for unknown reason. Jul. 8th 9:34pm: Report coming in that 30-35 protesters have been boxed in by police at 21st and Mission. Jul. 8th 9:30pm: Most everyone is back to 16th and Mission to regroup. Some still strung around area. Police squad chasing some runners up Mission, possibly up to 50 people. Window(s) broken at Wells Fargo. About 8 riot police have followed one group back to 16th and Mission. Jul. 8th 9:14pm: Organizers put call out for all participants to regroup at 16th and Mission. Jul. 8th 9:13pm: Mood is tense as people keep trying to step off of sidewalks and running to avoid police. Jul. 8th 9:10pm: Two groups regrouping about 22nd and Mission, walking in street against traffic as police struggle to push crowds back onto sidewalk. Police have confiscated sound system, Jul. 8th 9:08pm: Group outran cops and divided. One group at 23rd and Mission, one on 23rd closer to Valencia Jul. 8th 9:03pm: Now about 500 protesters moving up 24th toward Valencia One person arrested at 24th and Valencia - reason unknown. Jul. 8th 9:00pm: All protesters on sidewalk at 23rd & mission Jul. 8th 8:57pm: At 21st and Mission, police attempting to move marchers onto sidewalk. Jul. 8th 8:51pm: 200+ people are marching down Mission towards 17th Street, taking up two lanes of traffic. Police have announced with loudspeakers that marching in street is illegal. Jul. 8th 8:21pm: About 150 people are now at meeting spot. March not starting yet. Lots of black flags. Anarchist Action banners and NOIN banner. Lots of motorcycle cops at the scene and more police with vans in waiting about a block away. Jul. 8th 7:47pm: People have begun gathering around BART at 16th and Mission www.indybay.org
Jul. 8th 10:14pm: 16th and mission Crowd of 50 Police presence minimal or non existent Jul. 8th 10:08pm: Scuffle reported on 23rd between Valencia and Mission. Officer may have been struck and others were calling out "officer down!" Jul. 8th 10:04pm: 50-75 marching toward 20th on Mission. A few cops and one car trailing crowd. Jul. 8th 10:01pm: One cop ran out of nowhere and knocked over a protester. Attempts made to rescue arrestee - no word on success of attempt. Moments later, police car ran into back of crowd and then crashed. Police are swarming in but do not seem effective except in following protesters. Jul. 8th 9:58pm: Main march of 75 or so on 23rd in street heading from Valencia towards Mission, Newspaper boxes being thrown into street. Lots of vandalism. Appears to be an undercover cop amongst crowd, but no uniformed police at this point. Jul. 8th 9:53pm: Some people broke off from main march and broke windows at KFC. Bank of America also attacked along with other corporate targets. Some trash cans set on fire. Jul. 8th 9:46pm: Skateboarder arrested at Mission and 22nd. He was told to get off street and did, but then ran into building and police pursued and arrested.
Jul. 8th 10:43pm: Police car on fire in mission district, confirmed by two callers. Jul. 8th 10:39pm: 20 protesters on Valencia at 20th note 10 motorcycle police zooming back and forth Jul. 8th 10:36pm: Report of "300" riot police assembling at 17th and Mission and others with police vans carrying plasti-cuffs. Jul. 8th 10:33pm: Autonomous groups roaming city in various directions looking for corporate targets. Report of protester who threw tear gas canister at police around 23rd getting seriously beaten and setting off mini-riot. Jul. 8th 10:29pm: Reports that crowd not going to 23rd and Mission. 50 riots cops and paddywagon at 23rd. Only those encircled for arrest remain. All others have dispersed from area. Jul. 8th 10:24pm: People want to attempt regroup at 23rd and Mission in support of those encircled by police. Jul. 8th 10:18pm: 16th and mission. Not necessarily, but to those who can think accurately about the history of corporate capitalism, they would most probably lean in that direction. Not in any one direction, mind you. There are many variations, most of whom are NOT Marxist or communist. You don't need to be a communist to be against global capitalism, or what many call it... corporate rule. Communism is just another form of enslavement.
Amen on your last sentence! I am anti G-8 and I consider myself to be perhaps what you might call a capitalist sympathizer yet strongly oppose corporatism and corporate welfare! right speez, but some might claim that capitalism in ANY form will ultimately lead to corporate rule. of course it's debatable, and I'm of the mindset that capitalism on a LOCAL LEVEL ALONE is perfectly fine, but to me, it's already had its chance and now something altogether new needs to form, and it already is.
