I really want to learn to crochet, but I've looked in books at the bookstore, and it just looks so damn hard! Of course, that's probably just me. Is it hard to learn, and how long did it take you to really get the hang of it?

doesn't take too long at all. i've been crocheting for about 10 years now but a friend of mine at work started about 3 months ago and you should see some of the stuff she cranks off!!! if you check out about.ca there is an awsome stitch glossary and tons of patterns to browse. i subscribe to a crochet newsletter and it rocks! lots of great ideas to keep me on my toes. :D

I've been teaching myself for at least the last 6 months. I now know how to do all the stitches and can follow patterns quite well, but I found it very difficult to get to that level. And I find I have to constantly keep at it or else I forget a lot of stuff. I have a whole bunch of unfinished projects too. But I have to say - it is a lot of fun and extremely addictive!

well i learned to sew a single chain when i was about 8 (i think) so it can't be too hard... then again, i was taught in person while doing it myself at the same time... which i think is easier than reading it right? anyway, i don't think it should be too hard :) i've completely forgotten everything now though :(

I crochet, my Grandma taught me about 30 years ago. I like doilies best. yarn isn't my thing. I did find a good magazine, that works really well for me it has the directions in the back, of all the stitches. And patterns of projects to do. I like it cause it has diagrams, and written instrutions on everything. a good one to teach yourself with. Ther are 2 of them one is; magic crochet. The other one is called decrotive crochet. Good luck and have fun. Both of these are mostly full of thread projects.

I was taught a long time ago by my great grandma. I can't remember how to do it, but I'm going to try and get taught again. I can't learn stuff like that from books. Visual/kenetic learner.

it took me forever and a day to teach myself how to crochet. but in the end you can do alot more things than knitting. grany squars are a pain to learn but soooo much fun to do. i learned form an idot's guid, step by step. you mite want to check out if there are any crochet or knitting groups in your area. they could teach you.

The books tend to be very confusing. I learned from the "Big Wig", aka my grandma. Usually craft stores have workers there that are willing to teach someone how.

I find crochet easier than knitting. Once you get past the initial co-ordinating your hands and stitches, its quite fun and easy. Most craft stores have beginner classes. You may find it easier to have someone show you rather than learn from a book. :)

Hey Acid Queen, did you ever end up taking the class? If so, how'd it go? I'm curious about learning to knit. My brother got me "Stitch & Bitch" for my birthday along with some really nice yarns, and I wanted to knit him a beanie or scarf in time for Christmas. The book is cool and all but I think it would be easier to learn from someone.

I just went out to walmart and bought a book that taught all the stitches and had some projects in it to give you the hang of it. I caught on real quick (this was in May), and I can do some pretty complicated stuff now. It seemed really confusing at first, but if you just stick to the book, it'll start to make sence. That's how it was for me, anyhow.

    Hello.

    I've been crocheting since I was 7 (29 now).

Crocheting is really easy ( in my opinion). The best book I can recommend is the Idiot's guide to Kniting and Crocheting. I even look back through it when I get stuck. Then when you are ready for more intricate and more difficult stitches I recommend Harmony's Stitch Guide.

I only crochet. I found knitting to be harder. Fortunately, with tunisian, I get the look of knit with using just a hook.

I think crochet is easier than knitting too... once you get used to holding the yarn properly it's quite easy... :) good luck learning!
