My sister went to the last gathering (and we are considering going to the local gathering on Monday). Anyway, she absolutely fell in love with 'fire dancing'. She's wondering.. without having to shell out a lot of bread for training gear, is there something she can use (with the correct weight, feel, etc) to maker her own 'dummy' fire poi trainers? She doesn't want to actually use fire at this point, just learn the moves, etc. We've looked at various websites with 'training' poi for sale, but they're kind of pricey for us right now. Thanks all!
i did a search for homemade fire poi stuff, but with unfortunately no results. thats an interesting activity you are participating in, ive always been a little interested in the native american culture myself - more in terms with mysteries and such (example: studies of the anasazi) fire pois are used alot at raves and parties, and you sortof to the same acts in firedancing good luck, sorry I was of no help
It's gorgeous and mezmerizing. I know my sister would be fantastic at it... she's a really good dancer to begin with. I'm proud of her interest in learning the art. Personally... I want one of those cool hand drums!! I could drum for her & she could dance the fire.
should check out this video... http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=drums14 not the greatest,, but hey we were in a altered state when we filmed it...
I suggest any kind of thin and small link chain (dog or wallet style) which you can find at any hardware store by the foot (2 sections roughly the length of the user's arm). Attach a key ring to one side and a tennis or racquet ball to the other and you're all set. These can be decorated with some kind of brightly colored "sock" around the ball as well. Those should get you started, just put your middle or index finger in the keyring and practice syncing up the rotations, you'll get them tangled regularly until you begin to feel out the right rhythms but don't be discouraged. You can shorten the chain and increase the speed by letting the chain wrap around both you're middle and index fingers and then pinching with your thumb at the desired length. When you want to move to fire, remove the tennis ball and take any long strip of denim material, lace it through the end of the chain and then wrap it around itself repeatedly to form a tight ball. Then take metal wire and twist it around the denim in two or three places, wrapping that back through the chain as well. These can be soaked in almost any fuel but i've found lamp oil or tiki fuel produces the best color with the least heat. Make sure to spin them off before lighting them or you'll be throwing fire everywhere. It's a good idea to have a spotter or two with wet towels handy and to be fully clothed (long pants, long sleeves) at least until you're comfortable with them. When they go out make sure to smother them fully (shoe over top in wet grass or some such) cuz the denim will smolder away quickly and you'll have to replace it if you don't. Pros use kevlar wicks that don't smolder so much, but that stuff's pricey. Have some fun Dave

I used to really like fire poi. To practice, and to be economical, I just got two long shoe laces, and tied them to small but fairly heavy rubber balls... and then practiced.
