I saw James Brown in concert about three years ago, but I don't know as much about his music as I should. But I love "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud," and "Sex Machine."
I saw him at Bonnaroo last year, and it's one of the worst shows I've ever seen in my life! I hate to say that...I had really been looking forward to it...but it was terrible. They just kind of kept playing "I Feel Good" over and over again, with a few little breaks to play pieces of other songs...but I still don't remember him singing a lot. He just kept "announcing" himself, like he was in Vegas or something, and telling everyone how great he was. I was terribly disappointed.
I love James Brown, I own a compilation by him as well as the Sex Machine live album (which is great) I'd say my favorite songs by him are: - Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine - Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose - It's A Man's Man's Man's World - Say It Loud (I'm Black I'm Proud) - I Feel Good - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
That sounds pretty bad yeah! I always loved his music (well, what I own at least!) but never really like HIM, and especially not now!
Well, James Brown's music started to decline around the mid-70's, and his music has never been the same since. Unfortunately, he has become a bit of a lounge act. But what he is doing today should not overshadow his older work, nor does it stand as a representation of his catalogue, which consists of some truly great music that has stood the test of time - whether you personally care for his music or not.
