ain't dat da truth!!!!! try tattooing... my hubby's art - talk about everybody wanting something custom, but can't even give you a verbal description of what they want. as apprentice i'm supposed to nail down exactly what it is and draw it up - lol!!! sometimes i tell em 'just go home until you have SOMETHING scribbled out' i'm not a mind reader and i sure as hell don't know what 'um, and you know, one of those, uh, cool thingys' looks like in their mind! lol!!!
I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with custom orders. You never gave me a chance to do right by ya.
Gr8ful, I can definately see how it works with tattoos. I am just now getting to where I will let my friend do a custom peice on me!! I have seen a lot of his work and have decided it is about time to let chop finish up my back peice, I am gonna tell him to do anything he wants as long as there is green and stars =)
i've done some commissions. i have yet to do one that i really didn't like, if i don't think i would be into it i wouldn't say yes...i'm sure it would piss me off if something like that happened. never thought about money up front cause it's always been somebody i knew, so far...but you never know...i might have somebody random find me, you never know!
not to be totally off topic... but good for you that you have someone you can trust i don't know how your guy will be, but if anybody gives my hubby artistic rein he gives them way more tattoo than they pay for. there's some really beautiful green inks out on the market now - he did a little froggy on our neighbor's ankle and its just as bright as a new leaf.
That's what I have found with my guy. I have gone in with vague ideas of what I've wanted and let him loose, after I came to trust him. He understands the style he has started on the leg, it's "his" leg. I'm literally jumping inside to start the new one, but money is an issue. And that's knowing he's charged me about half the going rate for all of mine. It was a sympathy issue at first (the scars) and now I think it's that I'm a 'regular'.
That's why I don't even bother with custom order ~ they are too stressful! I've had people like that the few times I have decided to do a (sort of) custom order.... I don't understand why they email you the first time with the colors if their minds aren't really made up! And then worrying if they will fit right & all ~ I would rather just make something, and if the measurements change as I am working I don't have to worry about the sizes. (A few times girls have asked if I would make a wedding dress, which would be the worst of all custom orders!!)
Believe me, I know ALL about custom order problems! Everything I sell is custom work & while most people are quite satisfied, I always have one now & then that is not happy with what they receive. A lot of times it is stuff that I can't control. Tie dye is an art, & while some variables are controlable, sometimes things just "happen"! This to me is part of the coolness of the art. It is about the uniqueness of each item I dye. And depending on the colors they choose, there is always an element of surprise in what other colors appear where they touch or blend. Also, just because I use the same 6 colors as what is on the sample they see, that doesn't mean that each color will magically be in exactly the same place & proportions on their item.
I can relate... I don't get mind changers as much as people who keep sending me details email after email but keep leaving out the specifics like what stones to use and such. And of corse they take forever to respond and eventually they just drop off of the face of the earth.. I have found that I am always more creative and make nicer pieces when I am working from my own mind and ideas. I guess it makes sense that the artist channels their visions better than other people's. or something peace
I think you must have your rules and tell this rules your customers before having businness together. Write down the rules, which make your work comfortable. Tell your customers they can't ask you for another color after you began to sew. Good Luck!
