Why do people dislike me because I'm a "hippie"?

When I go out in my street, I get young kids shouting "har, you f**king hippie!" continuously as if it's a terrible insult, and occassionaly throwing things and generally just making nasty comments because of how I look.

If I'm in town dressed in some of my louder garments, I get people pointing and laughing their heads off, and people honking making rude gestures from cars and shouting things like "having a laugh, arn't ya?!"

Just last week, I was strolling down the street with some friends wearing my bright pink tie-dye flairs, and a guy who looked mature enough, about 30, said "excuse me mate," then started giving me a load of rubbish about how "you look like a f**king puff with them on like; I wouldn't f**king dare wear that!"

Has anyone else ever had this kind of abuse?

Why do people feel the need to be so nasty because I wear what I want to wear?

Are the people where I live just completely stupid, or did I miss something important?

Yeah, they're arrogant dipshits. I really blame society.. they really know how to teach that peace loving people are bad.. fucking crazy.

 

Cos they're dumb.... You represent freedom and expression to them, and that scares them.

Maybe they are jelous of your ability to divert from society's standards of clothing? Of course, they would never admit it to you or even to themselves, and would justify their own fear by feeling superior and insulting you.

I know what you mean, man. I got kind of the same problem myself. But as they say "forgive and move on".

 

i think that many people have been taught to act like that. The reason they pick on people like hippies is they are easy targets. They stick to peace rather than violence. If someone started insulting a punk sort of person they are not usually going to just stand there, they might bash your brains in. So people tend to look for easy prey to throw their bad vibes at.

Just be you and remember humor. Smile and laugh and just let them keep their bad vibes to themselves. Its not fun making fun of someone when it has no effect on them. I would think it will be easier as you age too. Many people view younger hippies as posers since it is now currently a fad.

 

I rather be call a hippie than a white guy trying to pass as a ghetto black guys with bagy pants and the pants waist line below the left nut. and making retarded hand signs.

 

that's kidna fucked up, I realized that you guys would get treated like shit by a few people, but I didn't figure by that many, I don't agree with too many hippy beliefs, I think they are dreamy and completely unrealistic, but I don't hate too many of you
although I must say, there are some college hippies that sit around on their porch and play their horrible fucking music all the time that I am thinking abotu murdering

 

Hippies very few you describe ABOVE are NOT true Hippies so really you dont have much of case. Real Hippies dont walk around with cellular phones . and a apple POD .

Well, I wouldn't know how it is with you young hippies but I can tell you what it was like in the 60's and early 70's. I used to go in stores or restarants and they wouldn't wait on me because I had long hair. They would always use the same old cliches "is that a woman or a man" and "long-haired hippie freak" I've heard it all more times than I can recall. I was often threatened with violence and of course I was always out numbered so the only thing that I could do was walk away and try to ignore it. I think people are always going to be that way with some who is a bit different and hippies have always been an easy target. Kindness is to often mistaken for weakness.

 

Those people are very sheltered if thats all they can think to do.
