I just watched this tonight and I really liked it. If you like Amelie it's very similar~ it was done by the same director, Audrey Tatou is the main character, and it has a lot of other actors from Amelie in it. The basic outline of it is that Tatou's character Matilde is trying to find out if her fiance (who was drafted) is alive or dead (he is supposedly dead, but she doesn't believe it and keeps saying things like "if the dog comes in before dinner he is alive" and they always happen. I needed a movie like this tonight, reaffirm my belief in love. The end made me cry...

I loved both of these movies (Amelie, Long Engagement). Thank you for mentioning them, because I think lots of other people deserve to see them. And thank you, because thinking of these movies makes me smile.

AVLE & Amelie are great. If you've ever seen interviews with Jean-Pierre Jeunet (the director), you'll say to yourself "Man, he's just a swell guy." All the funny little quirks in his movies, like the dog coming home before dinner, etc, are all parts of his personality. Just like the "things I like / things I don't like" stuff in Amelie... it's all right outta his personal life.

If you're into the darker stuff, definitely check out "City of Lost Children" he did w/ Marc Caro back in '95, prolly my fave movie of all time.

    yes he is wicked.

I am soooo sick of run of the mill romantic comedies, y'know ones that have sandra bullock/meg ryan cavorting around new york/a token big city, their love/hate relationship with the cad-with-a-heart-of-gold/hugh grant finally becoming perfect after one of them makes an embarrasingly public speech/apology in a crowded restaurant/lift/airport.

    gross.

but they do make amelie and long engagement that much more refreshing. Gorgeous movies, they make you believe in love again.

and i'll def check out city of lost children (thanks).

umm... a couple of other good love stories (if you're interested) would have to be in my opinion Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Love Actually, Swept Away, The English Patient, and Stealing Beauty... Hehe... And as for Meg Ryan, I must admit I love French Kiss.

Oh and I'm gonna have to check out city of lost children too... if our rinky dink movie store even carries it...grrr...probably not...

yep seen all of them but Swept Away.
Some wonderful love stories to add to that would be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State and Donnie Darko.
