I hadn't made any dyes in over a year, but my neice was going to see Phish, so I bust out the ol dye and still have the touch...enjoy! Jen
Wow! VERY nice... you did a great job. I've never made any nor have i ever seen any that detailed. peace barefootnikki
Awesome shirts! Just a question for ya. Where'd you learn to make those designs? I've been dyeing for a little bit now, and working on expanding my repertoire of designs. We're pretty much stuck on basic designs for now. Did you use trial and error to learn those, or use alternative sources for the info? Any help would be appreciated Thanks & Peace Robby
I was taught by a man in Austin TX around 1992, right after the national in Colorado. He taught us that you can make anything symetrical, as long as you can fold it all together. We use procion dye, order from www.dharma.com (hope thats it). They probably have a how to section on there to give basic ideas, but you are unlimited in what you can do.....especially if you want to spend some time to tie them. The dye is superior but you should always wear gloves when mixing and using it, and always wear at least a mask, if not a respirator when mixing the dye. THe guy who taught me developed a serious "allergy" to the dye....I belive he attributes it to being careless in protecting himself; peace love and tie dye to all Jen
Sweet...thanks! Suppose I'm going to have to order a book or two for advanced techniques... I've already discovered the quality of the procion dyes. I love 'em. After using them I will NEVER touch a box of RIT again. Guess it's time to a little more experimenting with the tying as well. TRhanks again Peace Robby
Did Rob and Becky teach you? Or one of their students? Wish I could do sinew. It hurts my hands. Nice dragonfly. We've never seen anyone else do one.
Becky learned at the same time as my husband and I, from Ron, for a while, we were all in Austin. They have done amazing things with their website, aye? We have seen each other a few times over the years, but not for the last 3 or so..Hope they are well, they have a great buncha kids!
I have never used any thickener, but I would be willing to try it, there are times I wish I had something like that. I think that would be good in batik, also. I dont know much about that tho, the closest I ever got to batiking was making 2 or 3 and giving them away, right before I moved last year. I did make an electric batik gun. Out of a soldering iron and a bowl....would have worked if I kept trying, but it leaked, I stuck with tie dye. I would like to try again tho then I make myself remember, life is what happens while you are making plans smile, Jen
hey people i am pretty good with the old dying with tye of the shirts and such and was wondering if anyone had any sites where they listed the patterns for the guitar and funky stuff like that. or even just symmetrical shapes just not the stuff you see everyday on the same people thanks in advance for all of your help -----
Sweet work sister, those were real nice you should bust out the dye more often, you definetly have the gift. Yeah the powdered thickener is called sodium alginate. it is actually just refined seaweed. be sure to use the "Dharma dye fixer"or DDF it is an afterfix that keeps the dye from sweating out when you swim in the ocean or sweat.Dharma is the only ones who carry it as far as i know. tiedyebruce
