    Hey now,
I'm thinking about a trip to Illinois next spring. I'd fly into Midway. What is public transport like (really like) and what would my options to get up to DeKalb be? Amtrak?
Figuring out if I need the hassle of renting a car. I'd prefer not to, even if I spend close to the same on public transport & trains.

Public transportation from Midway is pretty easy. There is an "L" train that goes right into Union Station downtown and from there you could take either Amtrack train or Metra train to DeKalb. Check out this website http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/ . You can tell the site where your coming from and where you want to go and it will tell you how to get there on public transport. Its really helpful. You should be able to get from downtown to DeKalb without renting a car. Good luck and enjoy your trip. You should spend some time in the city, too. Theres always something fun going down.

Merle, I responed to your Denver Q. Anyone who quotes Tom Robbins is Ok in my book!
I assume I'll spend a day in Chicago.
also I plugged in RTD (Denver-Boulder bus/light rail in the other answer. We think alike: make the transport authority figure it out!
