Lately I've been noticing that eating fried foods makes me feel sick to my stomach. I'm not talking about fried as in french fries (I don't eat that sort of stuff)...more along the lines of stir fried vegetables and chinese food-ish stuff. I feel sick for the rest of the day after eating fried stuff, and it's begun causing me 'digestive disturbances' too. Never had any problems before this, but I think since going veggie I'm more aware of my body and how it reacts to different things. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? I'm not sure if this belongs in the vegetarian forum, but I wasn't sure where else to put it.
yes. I too as of late have been gettin screwey from my 'normal foods' seems like anything that isnt organic, makes me sick.... badly..
Definitely noticed that myself....even stuff I used to think was healthy (even though it wasn't really, though it's not that bad- like white bread) has begun not agreeing with my body so well. Which is weird because I've got cast iron guts....not even the water in mexico made me sick!
Hey barefoot, I remember feeling the same way. Since then (about a year ago) I've cut fried foods out of my diet entirely. The boiling temp of water is 212F, which is sufficient to cook anything. But oil bumps the temp up to as much as 500F. I won't give you a boring chem lecture; you'll just have to take my word for it that nasty things happen to molecules at such temperatures. Simple chains (easily digestible) become complex (downright toxic). I've been slanting my nutrition toward a 100% raw diet. I'm about 75% right now (gotta cook that eggplant!), but by the end of the year I hope to be there. That's pretty cool what your body is telling you. Listen to it!
When I first went Veg*n, I used to still eat "buttered" popcorn on the rare occasion when I would go to the movies. Then I had some and felt like my entire digestive system was covered with grease. Yuck. I felt gross for three hours afterward. I don't eat "buttered" popcorn at all now.
def. know what you mean. what kind of oil do you fry it in? most oils become carcinogenic when you cook with them. extra virgin(preferrably organic) olive oil is the only semi-safe one to cook with....even then, your cooking the nutrients right out of your food, better to just go raw like spaceduck said....
where's the evidence for all this? i love to stir fry, and i love chinese food. a little veggie oil is much better than boiling away all the nutrients in water.. i have to admit junk food has become a lot more unappetizing to me after becoming vegetarian, but not sauteed stuff (except in butter, that's just gross, imo) and extra virgin olive oil is supposed to be good for you, though i would think raw olives would probably be the best thing, rather than the oil squeezed from them
I use extra virgin olive oil....and it still makes me sick. Not even going to attempt frying with butter or anything else....lol. I think I'm just going to stop trying to stir fry food...
I was never able to eat chinese food without getting sick to my stomach... even before I went veg Pretty much anything with oil gives me ...gas. >.<
"Burning any cooking oil can increase the amounts of PAHs*. Oil of any kind which has been repeatedly heated to its smoking point will lose it's natural antioxidants and begin to accumulate free radicals and other cancer causing substances. * (PAH) Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a group of chemicals which are formed when petroleum, petroleum products, coal, wood, cellulose, corn, or oil are burned. There are over 100 PAHs which have been studied. During oxidation and detoxification in the liver they are thought to form substances which damage DNA, starting a chain of events which could lead to cancer. A few of them have been classified by the EPA and The Department of Health and Human Services as carcinogenic to animals in studies and probably carcinogenic to humans." Reference: John Deane, M.D. http://www.oliveoilsource.com/oliveoildr-cancer.htm Like stranger sez, extra virgin olive oil is the best (or "least worst") oil to cook with, because it develops only minute amounts of PAHs. But, hey, if you're really serious about health, why not go all the way & cut out all of em?
it's true just do a Google on "acrylamides"........eek!! These are one of the new nasties, and one of the reasons why grains shouldn't be the staple that they are in many cultures..........exept maybe for rice
that's because cooking food/frying food kills it and destroys it, your stomach doesn't know what to do with it.. it's not food anymore
