    Hey all -

I'm planning on moving to Denver towards the end of August or early September. I'm am ready to get out of Chicago. I'm starting to look for jobs and places to live but I'm wondering whats a good area of Denver to live in. I visited my friends Aunt last summer in Cherry Creek - that seemed a litte too residential. I'd like to live somewhere that I could walk to coffehouses, bars, grocery stores, etc. I love live music - jam bands and bluegrass especially - is there an area with more venues/bars that play that scene?

Any sort of information would be so helpful. I'm moving there not knowing anyone really, so all the information I'm getting is off the internet.

    Thank you so very much.

I wild recomend the Capitol Hill area. You can walk every where you might need to go, plus you are close to the Fillmore and Sanchos' (GD Bar).

Ok, I'm a littleton resident music junky. I live in Littleton to eliminate a daily commute.
Here's is what you will need to weigh: locale from work: it is so much better to drive to weekly entertainment than daily to work.
Budget. I pay $900 a month for a 1600 ft2 duplex. Half of that is Paul's dye shop and the office down in the basement.
This is actually a good deal.
    Don't know Chicago rents.
Transport: RTD is not bad, and light rail expansions are imminent www.rtd-denver.com
Music: guarnteed jam band music is at Dulcinea's, Cervante's Masterpiece Ballroom and Quixotie's: all owned by the Bianchi brothers and Scott Morrell.
They also on the previously mentioned pit of hell, Sancho's Broken Arrow.
Between Sancho's and Dulcinea's 100th Monkey, which share a building on Colfax, is a porn palace of the video peek-show type.
Folk venue to beat all folk venues in Swallow Hill. I volunteer there, it's Broadway at Yale on the Denver -Englewood line.

I do go to Boulder for some shows, mainly because there is usually a case of a night at say, The Fox, and a night at Cervante's.
    OR Dulcinea's and Triolgy.
From downtown, Boulder is 38 miles. estimate 45 minutes w/o traffic.

What is it you can do for a job?

what kind of neighborhood do you want to live in? Need a college close by? Need work close by?
    Cherry Creek is EXPENSIVE.

i'd like to have my work close by. i'm a commuter right now and its awful. i spend about 20 hours a week in the car getting to and from work. but - a 15/20min commute would be cake for me. thats far less than i'm used to. i work at a non profit in event planning and fundraising - i'm looking for a bit of a career change with the move - i want to get out of nonprofits. too much work and not enough pay...i'm applying for anything that i think i could be good at and more importantly enjoy. meeting/conference planning, private event planning, i really think i'd like to get into booking music for bars, venues, etc. its hard to find those jobs, though, from chicago. if i can't find anything by september, i think i'll just move and get by on waitressing for a while.

i'd like to live somewhere that has an energy about it. i'm going into this solo - i know but one person in denver so i'm definatley looking to meet a lot of people and make new friends. i assume that an area like that would be more in the city than suburbs - i'm just trying to figure out what part of the city would be best for me. then - once i get set and comfortable in the city - my plan is to explore and fall in love with a mountain town and move there. i am getting tired of the city scene.

i really appreciate your input and let me know if you have anymore questions about chicago. i could reccommend a couple great places to catch some live music any night of the week.

tom robbins is amazing. fierce invalids home from hot climates is my favorite - just started reading it again for the second time. john irving comes next. he just came out with a new book that i can't wait to get my hands on. just waiting for the library to get it in....

If you are brave enough LO DO (lower downtown) is nice, but cost of living tends to run a bit high...convenience I guess.

When you get here be sure to plan a trip to Paris on the Platte. It is an awesome little coffee shop serving up some great food too. There is an adjoining bookstore next door as well so you can grab some reading while you chill.

Anywhere around the downtown district sounds like the place for you...just look into those neighborhoods before you settle in. The difference between trendy living and crack whores and prostitutes are but a couple blocks from each other.

Good luck...let us know when you get there, I would be happy to show you around and take you out for a night on the town.

    She's right.
one e-headline today from the Denver Post was violence and noise in Lo Do.
Hello? you moved to the business district.
Five Points is gentrifying: a mixed bag now, but the gang banger activity had dropped off.
The tensions when rich non blacks move into THE black neighborhood (read On The Road and the Denver sojurn?) ar eevident and unavoidable. I'd love to see middle-class blacks remember gramma's and come back, too.

Ft Collins is a great area,IMO far better then any of Denver suburbs.Got the small town feel and a good transit system and lots of work.It will be easy for ya to find a job there during the summer as 20,000 students are gone for the summer.Only a 30 minute commute to denver and surrounding areas.Good luck

it's longer than 30 minutes. I think I was on I-25 for 45-60 post rush hour going to one of your coffee houses for a show. And the Aggie SUCKS.
For a music head, FTC means drive a lot.
and how many of those kids have jobs there.
You DO have Sunflower market (my friend Paul Rennix was in the paper in one) and the vibe is nicely laid back, but the frat boys to native population is a bit high, and as land grant school it pulls alll the rednecks who can read from pits of hell like Bennett, Byers and Strasburg, and Limon,,, ugggggghhhhhh
