This much is clear already. Judge Roberts is no Sandra Day O'Connor.

Last night we learned that President Bush wants to replace a woman who voted to uphold Roe v. Wade with a man who argued against Roe v. Wade, and that sends a clear signal that this White House remains bent on opening old wounds and dividing America.

There are big questions that must be answered involving Judge Roberts' judicial philosophy as demonstrated over his short time on the appellate court. The Senate must learn whether he has a clear, consistent commitment to upholding Constitutional standards like civil rights, the right to privacy, and Roe v. Wade. These issues are in serious question if you take even a cursory glance at his record.

We need to ask the tough questions to determine whether John Roberts is the nominee who will give America a Court that is fair, independent, ethical and committed to Constitutional freedoms rather than an ideological agenda, and I promise you I will do everything in my power to assure that no question is sidestepped.

Throughout every step of the confirmation process, I will keep you informed about the questions that need to be asked, the answers we need to demand, and the principles we need to defend. It's impossible to overstate the importance of this moment.

As the U.S. Senate discharges one of its most important responsibilities, I will be active and vigilant. I hope you will do the same, beginning right now. Start by sharing a few words about your personal feelings on the importance of this Supreme Court nomination.

Good. He would look funny wearing high heels and carrying a purse. There no telling, however, what he is wearing under those robes...could be a flaming red teddy with black trim.

Concerning his judicial philosphophy, not much of a surprise. All Presidents put up judges who mirror their ideas. Pres. Bush said as much when he stated his candidate will be someone who will not legislate from the bench.

No he isn't. She is a Judicial Activist, and he is a Constitutionalist. I say good riddance.

before i make an ass out of myself, i'm going to explain that i'm not quite sure what a constitutionalist is, but it sounds like someone who wants to maintain the constitution. isn't separation between church and state in the constitution? publicly held prayer in public schools certainly isn't separation between church and state.

OMG... The president is just evil!! I really don't think Judge Roberts will be put into the court. At least I hope not. The country is so divided with conservatives and liberals and when the news said Judge Roberts was as conservative as it gets it just really upsets me that our president is such a close minded individual. Its wierd how we are the land of the free. Basiclly we're allowed to have our thoughts, but the minute we act on them we are harrassed and considered wrong in the eyes of our president and the judicial system he is trying to form. That goes from abortion to gay marriage, medicianal marijuanna, all of that. I really think its time for some new liberal minds in Washington.

separation of church and state is not in the constitution.

It comes from a letter that thomas jefferson wrote to someone else talking about a 'virtual separation of church and state.' The courts used that letter as evidence thats what the founders intended.

I think separation of church and state has been taken too far. It was never meant to outlaw christmas from schools or anything like that. It was meant to keep literally the church out of the state and not ban religion from all things related to government.

    Read the first ammendment.

there is no way to take it too far anyway. separation is just that - keeping things separate. the farther the better.

sep. of church/state is the most important brick in the foundation of this nation. we were founded on religious freedom. not the ten commandments.

conservative cristians want a cristian state, nothing less. A cristian state means it would be against the law for me not to be a cristian, and be the type of cristian that those in charge are.

P.S. do you really think your being kept from practicing your religion in any way? ( other than not being able to convert me through the government)

Folks seem to forget a coupla things:

    • The Separation of Powers concept.
    • The highlighted sections above.
    • The US was not/is not/should not be a Democracy.

What difference does it make if he/she/it is a Martian as long as they are a strict Constitutionalist?

People need to stop asking whether a nominee is conservative or liberal. This is not what the founding fathers intended. Period.

I think judge Roberts would make a great Supreme court member.
    As for Abortion?

Why does our society let woman or men have children that have a history of abuse?
Why does society let people have children with a long history of alcoholism?
Why does society let people have children that have a long history of drug abuse?
Why does society let people raise children with a history of mental disorders?
Why does society let children be raised in slums?

Abortion is not a positive thing that happens in society. WAKE UP

Society is so closed minded it is easyer to close your doors at night then it is to face these issues.
Society has to go through many changes in adoption laws, and Society has to change its social point of veiw to move up to the next step.

Republicans trying to move up to next step.
Democrates dont care need votes no answers dead thought processes.

Libertarians are the key but libertarians need to develop there own constitution to safe guard there veiws. Libs are Anti-abortion

I have it memorized. Have you read it?

It says "Congress shall make no law respecting an ESTABLISHMENT of religion, OR PROHIBITING the free exercise thereof"

It was designed so we dont have a pope or cardinal or whatever making law. It wasnt meant that we couldnt hang up christmas designs in schools. As long as one religion isnt given preferential treatment there should be no problem.

I agree that sep of church/state is why we have been so fortunate and lucky. Again, if you think thomas jefferson meant to remove prayer from school or anything like that, i believe you're deluding yourself.

Now, i'm not saying we should have prayer in school, but we dont need to remove everything religious from the state.

    Stereotypical BS.

Never said i was. I'm very fortunate as an American. I'm not trying to convert you to be anything. However, i think it is absolutely BS that schools cant decorate for christmas and shit like that. it is absolute BS.

We have freedom OF religion..not freedom FROM religion. That of course doesn't mean you have to believe in a religion, but you have to respect that OTHERS MAY.
