After a while of reading it some people say "Hey why did god not destroy Adam and Eve?" after that comes up they come up other troubling questions about god and other things he did/did not When you read the whole Bible as it should be then you can see why he did this or that at least a bit more... but still some unanswerd questions bother you... The thing is the Bible is not all reavling. It tells only what you Need to Know in. It dose not atempt to explain Reality or why whats the perpose of it all. The bible just says how to be saved. If it did go into these concepts the people who cant grasp or understand these things would think "What a dumb book" and toss it to the saide. If you can grasp these things you really dont need to know to live(But its nice) then you could at least see that the bible has a lot of turth to it and beleave it. So all it tells us is what you need to know and be saved.
Well, here's my take, right? God is omniscient and omnipotent. So he builds this world, but an enemy comes along and sods it up and creates sin and evil and death and all that. So at the end of time he's gonna use the souls of almost everyone as kindling, eternally, and the heat from that flame is gonna warm the next creation, and THIS time it'll be perfect. Why not make the first one perfect, nip the whole sin/death/apple/whatever stuff in the bud and avoid the mass murders, tortures, etc.
Yeah, my favorite part is all those slaughters by God in the Old Testament. Those fucking infants!! How dare they SIN against The Holy Mass Murderer...smash their brains!!! Slaughter all the men and the oxen. Rape all the virgins. GLORY!!! PRAISE THE LORD OF WAR & WRATH...er I mean PEACE & LOVE!!
My friend, me thinks thou carry on over much. Honestly, only the idealistic teen aged girls, and the bleeding hearts make such a fuss over things 'history'. People always have died, and always will. People slay, and are slain. People are just that way. Christians are people too. But you, Libertine, will you be able to make the most of the moment given to you?
Yep. I do carry on over mass slaughters. I know that's pretty sad that I would get upset over rape or infanticide. Silly isn't it? So, just because murders have always existed is a reason to shun the massacres done by this "god" of "love"? What the hell kind of LOVE is that anyway? The concept of "god" is merely an excuse for mankind's enormous fuck-ups and his stupidity. The capacity for self-deception and arrogance of a belief of invisible, intangible breath men in the sky would be hilarious if these fucking people weren't so damn serious. I recently met one of these morons who has been fasting for 83 days. He looks like a fucking zombie. Only water and seeds (or some shit), this fool claims "god" told him to. What's next? Is he going to "cleanse" a shopping mall of its sinners? Wars, murders, and most other bullshit we deal with stem straight--I mean STRAIGHT--from this belief in spooky netherfolk and Holy Commanders in the Sky. Millions of people DEAD because their "god" wasn't the "real" god. I do carry on and I'll continue to be the voice of REASON, LOGIC and HUMANITY as long as I have a voice. I will continue to carry on over the sheep-cult belief that some fundamentalist dogmatist is trying to shove down our throats. I will make the most of my time WITNESSING to those with ears and eyes who will see and hear the cries of the victims of RELIGION. Until it is abolished from the face of the earth... Or I die. Which will likely happen first....but, until then I'll keep WITNESSING and winning minds...while the Christians can continue to try and win imaginary "souls".
Unless Sin is a necessary component of the creation. You know, the stone the builder refused shall be the keystone of the arch....
Hey - knock yourself out Libertine. Really. You have all the charisma of a Southern Baptist preacher. Good luck, dude.
I'll take that as a compliment. Even though most of them are insane, they have a lot of charisma. So, I suppose SANITY + CHARISMA means a lot of success!
Well, you might as well toss 95% of it into the sand anyway given your definition. All the bits that don't directly speak of 'salvation' - so pretty much the whole OT could go. But it's sheer rubbish to say that the Bible doesn't try to say anything about the meaning of life. Take a look at Proverbs for example. If that isn't trying to say something about the meaning of life, then what is it saying? It has truth in it - but much that is extremely obscure and misleading too.
God, what is the meaning of life? To crush your enemies, have them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women! That's the short of the O.T.....
I agree - I wasn't saying I agree with the OT's take on life, as it's pretty dismal. Just that it does claim to tell people about the meaning of life - which the original post said wasn't so. That's not to say I agree with the ideology it expresses - actually, I think it's extremely negative.
I think some of you guys are throwing the baby out with the bath water. The Old testament isn't one book it's a compilation of a few dozen. Most are more concerned with the persuit of wisdom/enlightenment than with politics. Psalms, proverbs, Eccleseastics, Ecclesastus, the Song of songs, the book of Job, many (if not most) of the prophets, Kings and Chronicles I&II, Daniel... Mainly if you read the books that are more concerned with a message than "history" you find a completely different theme.
Umm, the baby is in the new testament.... Where God says "Come on guys, I was joking, you are gonna live forever in paradise once you overcome your psychological attachment to your fleshly bodies. Part of overcoming this attachment is, guess what? Death of the flesh (such as the crucifixion). Don't worry about it- you might actually enjoy it, after all, I made war and hell for you to enjoy, do you remember all the times I told you "drugs are bad, sex is bad, murder is bad, etc.?" because it will kill the flesh? Do you remember how drugs and sex feel? Just remember, I also told you 'pleasure is bad because it will destroy the soul..'. Remember to take everything I say seriously.. Seriously, you should. I don't have a sense of humor."
That's true. "Jesus" is supposed to have said "I have not come to do away with the law, but to fullfill the law". or words to that effect. He also said "Love God with all your heart, strength, mind and love your nieghbor as yourself. This is the whole of the prophets" If he gave us the bottom line why look back? He also said Mark 7:8-9 8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men." 9And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[a] your own traditions!" According to secular and even most non secular scholars who I've read the first 5 books of the OT, the heuteach (spl) wasn't compiled as we have it until sometime around the mid 4th cent bce. Up til then it was passed down by oral tradition. again if we have the bottom line, why look back?
