I was wondering if perming and coloring hair around the same time can be damaging, with all the chemicals and such.
I've been coloring my hair for almost six years and I've never had a problem, but lately I've been wanting to cut my hair kind of short and shaggy, perm it so it's wavy, and then dye it with chunks of blonde, light brown, and red, and leave some chunks of the color it is now, which is like a light reddish.
I'll probably get the cutting and perming done one day, and then the coloring a few days later.
I don't want my hair to turn into straw! Any tips?

both are bad for your hair and doing both in a short time period might not fry your hair, but it will cause damage

Best to wait a bit between them...just for the health of your hair...

If you're having it done at a salon they will suggest dying it a few weeks after perming it.. They won't do both (if so they shouldn't be working).. Both can damage your hair but having too many chemicals can result in your hair falling out.. I don't know about you but the next to last time I went they had to strip mine, then add the color.. They shouldn't even strip it, it fries your hair, that's where they remove the old color before putting on the new dye.. If I were you I would perm it and wait a few weeks before dying it..

I'd dye it before perming it... just because I've heard you aren't supposed to wash your hair for a few days after a perm, and dying it is much harsher on your hair than simply shampooing.

hehehe, here speaks she who has been ever colour under the sun ;) and has done anatomy for beauty therapy Do NOT colour for 2 weeks before and after perming, it can go horribly wrong. Your hair takes a beating with both these procedures, best thing you can do, whichever way round you do it, is to buy a really intensive conditioner and use it all around the time you make the changes, instead of your normal conditioner. and continue to condition with the product at least once a month, more if finances allow, when you go back to your normal conditioner. Goodluck hunny, post a pic when your done, sounds really cool.xxxxx

i have also had many a differernt hair color...
and just as everybody else has said, the best plan is to wait 2-3 weeks.
a really good shampoo to use, i have found, if you can get you rhands on it is rainwater herbal hemp shampoo as well as the conditioner. and then also use an intense conditioner, i use doogro which comes in this little tub thing, and it works miracles. it also makes your hair grow out faster...

I use Nature's Gate Rainwater Henna shampoo, but I think they also make Rainwater Hemp. Is it good for the coloring or perming?
My cousin gets perms and she uses this stuff called "Get Curly" that helps maintain perms, I was going to see if I could find something like that, or use some kind of really clean rinse non residue stuff, like Tom's of Maine natural moisturizing shampoo.

I'm no hair expert, but I think (when it comes to dying your hair) you should keep your color within three shades of your eyebrows. Gives you a natural look.

Yeah, I've been through many shades of red; bright, dark, light, orangy, I've tried a lot. It seems like people who don't know it's dyed always think it's my natural color.
But this time I want to try a mix with chunks of blonde, light brown, and red, not even trying to have it look natural.

don't forget after you do all that to your hair to use a hot oil treatment to revive your hair after a few weeks. That keeps it from drying out.
