Im new to this site and apologize cause Im sure this has been answered before. I am planning a trip late winter/early spring. Never been to the city and am wondering if a hotel on or near vondelpark is too far away from the action. I will be walking mostly (I assume), and want to place close to the RLD, and the rest of the nightlife. Is Voldelpark too far away. Perhaps somewhere closer to the central station? Thanks again all. E-Town Concrete!!!
Vondelpark is quite a walk from the RLD... I just stayed by Rembrandt Park and that was about a 20 minute walk to the RLD. http://www.channels.nl/themap.html If you check the map... maybe someone can suggest a hotel that's closer.
As you can see, the Vondelpark isn't even on the map anymore so yeah, that's quite a walk to the RLD (that area is near Nieuwmarkt). I think if you pick a hotel anywhere within the regions of the above map, you're fine. Ofcourse, the closer to Central Station, the more in the centre of the city you are.. but anywhere within these maps should be fine. A friend of mine stayed in this hotel.. looked clean, and is in a perfect spot: http://www.hotel-bookings.nl/edenhotel.html The prices vary according to availability from what I know. He paid 2x59 euro for a wednesday and thursday.. in the weekends the prices go up I think. Anyway.. good luck, have fun.. and feel free to ask anything you want
The Eden's location is a good choice in my estimation because it's near Rembrandtplein roughly at Vijzelstraat and Amstel on the map above. From there it's about a 10 minute walk to Leidseplein, Museumplein, and the main RLD and Dam Square and about 15 minutes to Centraal Station. I'd say generally any hotel in the 1017 postal zone that includes Leidsestraat, Vijzelstraat and Rembrandtplein would add no more than 10 minutes to the times in my second sentence. I'm basing these times on a moderate speed walker.
I want to thank everyone for their input. Very kind. Another question, if your dont mind, I understand it is my decision but what do you guys think about the wintertime there? Im looking for less of a touristy feel and more of a natural feel. I understand it will be cold. Thanks again for any response!!
Go for it. January and February are the quietest and cheapest. Airline fares are half what they are during the summer and hotels might be about 20% cheaper. Just about everything tourist wise will be open although some places have more limited hours. For a good compromise I like the end of March, airline fares are not much higher than Jan and Feb and most hotels don't change to high season rates until 1 April. Also by then daytime temps can be up into the low 50's. If you can't wait November is about the same as March but cooler and definately rainier.
This picture was taking during the last winter (early Februari I think it was), in Amsterdam. It's hard to say what the winters here are like.. they can be rainy, snowy, cold but also clear blue sky with sunshine.. or just cloudy and that's it. So.. the thing I hate most is cold wind, I'm kinda used to rain and snow just look pretty so.. I dunno.. if you don't mind cold and rain winter should be no problem
I've been in Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb and they all hold something special: Nov - If your a marijuana smoker I find the weed to be near its best. Dec - Christmas feel everywhere! Jan & Feb - Good chance of snow and overall the quietest period to go. Jon
