This is gonna sound kindda silly but oh well. 4 weeks today I shall be winging my way to Canada to spend a fortnight with my girlfriend who I havent seen since march :). Only problem is I've never been abroad before, never mind on a plane! Safe to say I have NO idea what to expect, and that I'm more than a bit nervous, when I went into this relationship it slipped my mind that I'd have to take 8 hour flights from Manchester to Toronto to be able to see her. I have no idea what happens with checking in, customs etc. Anyone able to fill me in and maybe give some hints for making the whole thing easier for a nervous first time flyer?

    wow thats cool!
i've only been on a plane twice, and its one of the most exciting things!
just remember that the wings are MEANT to wobble, and it might help to have some sweets to suck when you're taking off and landing...
    enjoy it and relax :p
have a great time in canada dude

Icve been flying since i was a baby. Just relax and enjoy it.

Basically you get there and you find your checkin que. It will generally have a sign or a screen above it with your air company and flight destination/number on it. Then when you get to the front they check your tickets and passport and weigh your lugage and hand luggage. here your lugage gets taken away towards the plane and they ask you the usual questions like "did you pack yourself?" yes "have you left your luggage alone with anyone else?" no "have you packed any explosives, illegle substances, etc etc?" no then they give you your boarding pass and you can then go off and into the waiting lounge.

on your way into there you have to take off your coat and empty your pockets into a tray and put the tray and your handluggage onto a conveyor belt which goes through the xray machine whilst you walk through the security metal detector thingy then you pick up your stuff and your in the departure lounge.

here you sit around for an hour or so... shop...drink... spend money and read books and wait untill the time when your gate opens then you go to your gate and que. they check your passport and then you get onto the plane :)

    easy.

Its not as intimidating as it sounds.

HOWEVER customs at the other end make sure you know the person your stay with's first name and prefurably there address. cos i forgot the full name of my dads friend in canadas who i tayed with and the customs guy got all mean with me. so they will ask you what your buisness is in canada you say "visiting my girlfriend" they say "whats her name" give her name.

its generally not very hard to do you just followother people :)

This reminded me of the bit on Airplane, when they're taking off.

    Old lady : "Nervous?"
    Stryker : "Yes"
    Old lady : "First time?"
Stryker : "No, I've been nervous lots of times..."

Long haul flights are really boring. Its great if you get offered free food and alcohol though. I don't know whether all airlines do this. There is usually some in flight entertainment (i.e. a choice of films). Not much to do on a plane though for 8 hours, so you might want to take something with you. You can take electrical equipment (laptops, games consoles etc.) on board but you can only use them after take off and before landing (they tell you when).
