One of the world's largest cinema groups was just purchased by the Carlyle Group. Loew's the third largest cinema chain in the world was sold on the day Fahrenheit 9/11 premiered in the US. Coincidence? I doubt it. The Carlyle group which specializes in corporate takeovers of military & high tech companies all of a sudden is interested in entertainment ventures? The Carlyle group who's board includes George Bush (sr.) and once the Bin-Laden family is one of the main targets of Michael Moore's new film Fahrenheit 911. Loew's theaters does NOT match the typical Carlyle Group takeover scenario as it is not a struggling business, but in fact is at it's peak, meaning they had to pay a big premium compared to their usual dirt cheap takeover targets. The film is supposed to premiere across the US this week, and this purchase appears to be an attempt to censor and control access to this film by those who the film criticizes. Another example of how free speech is being censored in America! http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2004-06-21-loews-cineplex-sold_x.htm BTW, Fahrenheit 911 is expected to top the US box office receipts this weekend if it is indeed shown in 868 theaters nationwide. If Loews refuses to show the film, I wonder how many theaters will carry it now? It would be the top film for the chain, so there is NO VALID REASON not to show it. I believe they will watch audience reactions and pull the film if it damage's Bush's election bid. Hopefully other chains will jump in and pick it up. If Loews does indeed censor the film, I believe a boycott of their chain is in order!
I just discovered that Loew's is scheduled to be screening his film on 59 screens. That's less than 10%, but they're usually big screens in major metropolitan areas. It will be interesting to see what happens. I used to watch movies in Loew's theaters back in NYC when I was a kid. Now they're worldwide. Pity the damn Carlyle group has ANYTHING to do with that chain. I think they should be boycotted just for that reason alone, but especially if they do anything to hamper the screening of Moore's films.
Heh... Only a matter of time before making movies of that nature are illegal without letting the old Gov-ment take a crack at it first...
The American people obviously want to see this movie, just look at the weekend box office figures: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2004-06-25&p=.htm Even though it was in only about a third as many theatres as anything else in the top ten it came out on top. When I saw it friday it was on two screens at the theatre I went to and both were packed solid, they even had cops there to control the crowd and I suspect teargas us if we got too rowdy. This is in Texas, mind you, Busch's home state, and both sold-out screens gave bush a standing ovation. Even my dad, who was a life-long republican untill Busch screwed everything up stood up and cheered. When a 55 year old republican government worker gives a standing ovation to a film bashing the Busch administration, I think it is good evidence that Busch's days in the white house are numbered. Gods bless Michael Moore, Gods bless his movie, Gods bless America... And gods DAMN that fucktarded scumdog Busch and all his damned cronies!
Thats outrageous about the Carlyle group. I think the media should definately be talking more about the takeover than they have been. But I'm sure Carlyle also has strong connection with the media. Its just a giant spider web. we just have to kill the spider! Hard part is finding out who the spider is.
Yep, I just read where it topped the list. Nothing like trying to censor to bring out the best in movie goers. Michael Moore thanked all those right-wingers who tried to stop the film saying it only encouraged more people to see it. Sometimes it still amazes me the lengths to which the right goes to try to stop the truth of their corruption from coming out... Sue
Looks like Farenheit 9/11 is doing just fine at Lowe's, seeing as how 2 out of the first 5 movie theaters that come up for Farenheit 9/11 are Lowe's (in New York at least).
Loew's theaters does NOT match the typical Carlyle Group takeover scenario as it is not a struggling business, but in fact is at it's peak, meaning they had to pay a big premium compared to their usual dirt cheap takeover targets. Skip, it seems they are a struggling buiness: As part of the deal, Loews Cineplex also announced it's filing for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 provisions in the U.S. The deal will see Onex acquire Loews Cineplex for an equity investment valued at $375 million and a comprehensive restructuring of Loews' outstanding debt. http://cbc.ca/cgi-bin/templates/view.cgi?/news/2001/02/15/onex_cineplex010215
Skip, it seems like I cant look at the date of the articles. I saw many articles on of this on a search, but after I posted I looked for more and saw the date of Jun 2001.. After further research, all I can say is a lot of financial researchers say its a "Hold to Buy". The Carlyle Group, yes, has a lot of military investments but also spreads out their holdings in real estate, health care and consumer good. They even have intrests in "Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group". (OK boycott 7up)
The real breakdown of Carlyle investments: http://www.thecarlylegroup.com/eng/company/l3-company735.html
That was a good find Skip. It is obvious the control the right wing has over news media. This takeover is obviously to censor not only Moore's films but other films such as "Born on the Fourth of July" by Oliver Stone.
