On one hand, I agree with the view that started this thread. There's something wrong (not morally, of course) with saying you're a fan of some band while knowing very little (3 or 4 songs out of a catalog of over 50) about them. Then again, I got turned on to those guys though one or two songs back in the day (about 13 years ago): 'Over the Hills and Far Away' and 'D'Yer Mak'er'. I think one point we Zeppelin fans CAN agree on is that rock stations (who definitely should f***ing know better) should quit playing the same 2 or 3 songs constantly. I don't hear Kashmir much around where I live (though I take your point), but I'm damn tired of hearing only Black Dog, Rock and Roll, and Fool in the Rain. I always dug their mellow stuff too. Why not play That's the Way (esp. the BBC version) or No Quarter? Or faster stuff like Bring it on Home or We're Gonna Groove (the latter rocks!). Here's a band that did so much. Why play so little?
It sucks that those covers were uncredited, I lost a little of respect for them when I heard about that. http://www.warr.org/zep.html has info about it. Maybe I'm petty, but there you go.
About Led Zeppelin stealing from people... yea, they did do some of that, but most of it has been settled by now in or out of court, and justice has been served. Also, the blues is a style of music where musicians often "borrow" from each other- riffs, lyrics, etc. The difference is that Led Zeppelin became rich and famous- and they were four white boys from Britain. I think a lot of Blues artists were put off by this- and started complaining about it.
Well, it's not the uncrediting that bothers me, what pisses me off is that there were and are a lot of amazing, elderly blues and jazz musicians that are dying with pennies to their name and in poor health, because of people like Plant and Page... Don't get me wrong, they had their shit down and they were very crafty, but they aren't taking responsibility for their actions and maybe they're just too ignorant to care or even begin to want to understand. They don't need the fucking money, anyway.
Any style or genre of music can borrow, as you're not inventing the chords or notes, but simply arranging them. It's because that a lot of it isn't original or innovative and they weren't just borrowing lyrics, they were "borrowing" entire verses, choruses, and songs... Changing names. The lemon song? What the hell. You can't steal from Howlin' Wolf. Everyone knows his catalog too well. Hubert Sumlin is also a very underrated guitarist, who I believe was stolen from, well, hell, the lemon song/Killing Floor proves it. If you gave me the option to either see Hubert Sumlin today or a Led Zeppelin concert between 1969-1979, you're fucking right I'll go see Hubert Sumlin, and I have. (Watch Killing Floor on the Crossroads Festival DVD)
Those songs are so overplayed on the radio. like every radio station must have a get the led out thing, my stations on thursdays, and they just play those 5 songs in different combinations. once in a while they will play something new. i might not like it that much, but it is good for a change. i love those half hour medleys on How the West was won of Dazed and Confused, Whole Lotta Love, and Moby Dick. If you want a change, then find one of these people and cut their head off. then raise it up in the air and make an example of them.
I love every zeppelin song ever made!I live in tennessee, and all the zeppelin fans here are true, its not cool to like classic rock here, people in my old school used to follow that fad.But how do you know everybody that wears a 1977 concert T-shirt only knows a few songs. they could know more about led zeppelin than you.the important thing is that there are still people that listen to led zeppelin.
Not everyone who wears the 1977 T-shirt is ignorant... that's just the one that I see most young and above described "fans" wearing, which leads me to believe it may even be sold in such blasphemous establishments as Hot Topic... I guess I just don't like that shirt much. I like my BBC sessions one better...
this is off the subject, but i think jimmy page looked a lot better with a beard. but you have to do what you want to do. amen
