Cats Cradle........ Discuss Oh, and what's the one with Rabo Karabekian (Oh, jeez, that's bad spelling) where Vonnegut explains all the symbology of the characters and places in the introduction? That's a good one.....
i loved cat's cradle... it is short and sweet but poignant... it really gets to ya... it's been years since i read it and i've smoked much weed since then... so i don't really recall the plot... but i remember enjoying it immensely.
I just finished reading Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut and I think it is one of his best books. There are so many reoccuring themes in his books that after I read a bunch of them they start to blend together and I can't remember which is which. Cat's Cradle is the one with Bokonon right? That one is amazing, full of truths about people and life. Cat's Cradle and Sirens of Titan together paint a fairly accurate portrait of reality. Not to mention they are also very funny. People can learn alot from Vonnegut's books, I think.
I love Vonnegut. Cat's Cradle was the first of his books I read. I agree with Emanresu about his depiction of people and how we really are. I love reading authors like him and Chuck P and Hunter S Thompson who are brave enough to make fun of the sick ways we are in truth. It is always a good laugh. He says things I would be thinking. I say rather than discuss Cat's Cradle we talk about Welcome to the Monkey House. A collection of short stories with a lesson in each. Miss Temptation and The Euphio Question.
I have read alot of Vonnegut's short stories, and some of them are pretty good, but I think his later works are much more interesting/funny. It is amazing the way he is able to blend historical happenings with his own fiction, like how he writes himself into the watergate scandal in Jailbird. When it comes to blunt truth I think that Vonnegut, Hunter S, and Kerouac are the best. Also, I love how he tells short stories that he claims were written by Kilgore Trout. Some of them are so funny, like the one about the people who were so dumb that they didn't realize until about 500 years ago that there was another half to their planet. Or the one about the tree that has dollar bills for leaves so that it can attract people to it, who end up fighting to death and providing great fertilizer for the tree.
Mother Night is a great story about truth, responsibilty, and (like all of his books) the ambiguity of free will. Sirens of Titan is my favorite though.
way he looks, could only ever be a hobo or an author.... timequake rocks, as do most of the rest of his books, player piano is probably my favorite....
I've never read any of his full length novels, but I love his short stories. A few years back they printed "Harrison Bergeron" in the Wall Street Journal. Biting! It was at the height of all the regulatory bills pending in congress. (If you haven't read it, it's sortofa "1984"-ish story about the government dumbing down society to the lowest common denominator. Loved the irony.)
I did an independent author project on him, for high school english. He is my favorite author by far. I love his writing style, and his satire. Great author. My favorite is breakfast of champions.
Started It Yesterday Love It...but Also Hate It Cause There Making Us Read For School I Would Like It More If They Didn't Make Us
