Keith Emerson-- born November 1, 1944 in the English town of Todmorden Greg Lake- born in Bournemouth, UK Carl Palmer- Birmingham, England [W. Midlands] I don't know where you got the impression they were American.. Anyway, I prefer Yes. ELP is too wanky and dry for my tastes, Yes is at least consistently pretty.
i heard that ELP were the american version of YES in a book of the 70's that i read in the mid-90's. it was in a section of the book called "art rock". anyways i am much more familiar with yes but from what i've heard of ELP they are at least better than Genesis. ELP are not that great, but they're alright. i have to listen more to their stuff.
Ummm I don't really know how you could compare these two... ELP is really a more operatic, multilevel, seething band than YES, who repeated simliar themes often and placed more emphasis on singing and lyrics... they are too different for me to choose one over the other. they are good for too many different reasons.
And I don't really see how either could be compared to Genesis, who were more like psychedelic theatre pop than prog-rock jamming.
Yes = classical prog ELP = jazz prog I vote Yes, just because I prefer classical. But both were very talented.
I'll have to go with Yes. Yes is one of my favorite bands from the 70's and they had some incredible album covers.
I like ELP but I'm not very familiar with Yes....do you guys recommend any tracks that I should definitely check out?
Yours Is No Disgrace Starship Trooper Perpetual Change Heart of the Sunrise Long Distance Runaround/ The Fish And You And I The Revealing Science of God The Ritual Gates of Delirium Awaken
Roundabout The Fish Close to the edge I've Seen All Good People Long Distance Runaround And You and I just to name a few.
WonderG... for a total Yes newbie I'd suggest "And You and I". It's catchy, complex, simple & symphonic all at the same time. And while we're on it, for the ELP newbies I'd say "Karn Evil 9" (the whole thing) is a must hear.
some popular songs: Survival (1969) Time And A Word (1970) Starship Trooper (1971) I've Seen All Good People/Your Move (1971) Roundabout (1972) Wonderous Stories (1977)
Well, I haven't listened to much Yes, but I dig ELP.. Then again, I haven't heard much of them, either. Eh well.
This thread should not even exist. Of course Yes is better, only good thing ELP ever played was Tarkus.
