Few people under 30 don't know how much an impact The Beatles had, and still have, on attitudes, music, fashion and lifestyle. Every rock and roll band owes a debt of gratitude to The Beatles. Before The Beatles, rock and roll was regarded by many as kiddie music, something to leave behind when you became an adult. But almost from the start of their fame (in the U.S. Jan. '64) they ushered in new instruments. more complexities and imo an equaled harmony. The Beatles are in part responsible for the popularity of marijuana and other recreational drugs, like LSD (they recorded much of Sgt. Pepper and The White Album under the influence of LSD, or at least heavily influenced by it). The Beatles changed the way people looked. Until the Beatles, long hair on men was frowned upon. Same way with facial hair, and clothes They shattered the mold of how people were supposed to dress and act and look like. When Sgt. Pepper was first released in '67, it knocked everyone back on their heels. nd when I heard that The Beatles smoked marijuana (prior to The Beatles hardly anyone except beatniks and gang members smoked weed), I thought "hey I'll give that a try myself", as did millions of other people in the U.S., Europe and other places. Same way a few months later when I also found out that they took acid. The Beatles were also anti-war, specifically wars of agression like the war in Vietnam. They galvanized millions of young people to question what the gov't was up to. But thier legacy is their music. The largest selling group of all time. And yet most people under 30 are unfamiliar with the bulk of their music. They know Hey Jude and maybe a few others. Such a wealth of great music. A few years ago i was mentoring an 18-year old on outdoor growing, and I asked her how much she knew about The Beatles' music. Predictably, very little. So while we IM-ed, I sent her a few tasty tunes. She was amazed. She had no idea there was that much great music by "The Fab Four". She is now a big Beatle fan. I urge people who are unfamiliar with The Beatles to download some of their stuff and give it a listen
rangerdanger, would you go into a shop and steal a beatles cd? take it without paying? thats the same thing as downloading - its stealing as someone who works a lot in music - downloading is hurting people hard. we put out a release a month or so back, within 1 week it was available for download. downloading will kill small labels like ours fair dos the beatles are all minted now - but downloading copyrighted music is a crime, big label small label - doesn't matter - it is the same as stealing from a shop - its theft if people want to listen to the beatles, don't steal it - buy it
sorry rangerdanger that was a probably a bit harsh, the whole download thing just pisses me off. the kids now days think its ok to just download music, not thinking of the consequences of there actions. when in a few years time all the smaller diverse labels have gone bust, and alls they can listen to is manufactured mass marketed crap fronted by puppets of the record companys, they will understand ...
i understand that its stealing and its wrong and it will put smaller record labels outa business BUT y would i want to pay 15-20 bucks a cd .......wen i make 7 bucks a hour it would take me thre hours of work per cd....i have like 200 cds. thats a whole lotta hours. we can buy dvd now for real cheap. how come cds rnt as expensive as a cassette tape
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there a number of sites where, for a small fee, you can LEGALLY download tunes?
You know what else is stealing? Its not legally stealing but can be considered it. Micheal Jackson bought the rights to all of the Beatles' music, and at that time he was a good friend of Sir Paul McCartney. The two living Beatles' make no money off the music they spent years recording and creating. I'd rather see someone illegaly download their music then give money to someone who did nothing but buy the rights to it. The asshole even gave Nike the rights to use their song ''Revolution'' in a commercial, which completely contradicts the true meaning of the song.
i don't wanna cause an argument over it all this - you've agreed with me its stealing and its wrong. yeah there are legal download sites, but i don't know one label thats doing well through them - we certainly ain't and nor are any of the other labels i work with. mr average kid won't pay no matter how little the price if he can download them for free - and like you said, you wern't gonna pay - you think its to expensive. have you costed up putting out a release lately? i ain't in this purley for the money - i love the music - but if people keep sharing and downloading small labels will die you expect artists to makes the tunes, pay for studio equipment or time, labels to promote the tracks, master and press them - and you don't want to pay? you expect us to do all that for free? if you don't want to pay - don't get the music. you wouldn't expect not to pay for food and just steal it from a shop. would you grab the cd or record from my hand and do a runner? its the same thing. sorry to go on, but as you can tell this whole thing does my head in
What really jerks MY cord is that the price of a CD is so repugnantly expensive. If the greedy a-holes who own the labels and record companies would quit reaping $$$ on themselves the costs would go down. A CD (itself) is not worth more than pennies...so everything else goes into the WRONG person's pocket because only the BIG labels get music to the airwaves. Hopefully small labels will have their day...and the CD's will be 5 bucks...not 16 to 22! IMO
i understand wut u mean about putting u out of business. buts look people that make minimum wage cant afford to buy a cd and eat in the same day. if its available for free then y not. everyone loves music, i dont see how u just cant like music at all.
trader - maybe the big labels get stuff pressed really cheap - for small independent labels manufacturing costs are a killer! even just the mastering costs are scary! then take into account the distribution companys take there cut ( they earn more than anyone in this game ) the costs of promotion ( placed an advert in a music mag recently?! they cost mad money! ) artists want advances before labels have even sold a copy ( although we don't do advances ) you got x amount of stock you gotta give away free to magazines, dj's, radio etc, the artists want x copys for them, there mates and family! small labels have hard enough time anyway without people downloading and taking away sales. if you want the music, support the music - buy it. rocketdude - i want a massive cinema style tv. i can't afford it - but i'm not going to steal one ... if i want one that bad, i'll work more and save up. as you've agreed - its stealing and its wrong, that its music or food or a cineme sized tv - no difference, its stealing. when your favourite small labels die out and you can't pick up music by the artists whos music you love anymore, you'll understand rocket, and you'll have been a part of it ...
i dont see a moral dilema with stealing, and as far as the law goes, we smoke and grow, and i bet most of us speed or coast stop signs. i think stealin a few dozen songs isnt that bad. but millions and millions of people r doin this and thats y its having such a big impact. im not for punishing the people that download music.
i find that a bit of strange thing to say - "i dont see a moral dilema with stealing"! taking something that doesn't belong to you without paying is different to speeding or growing some bud! say i wanted your growlight and plants and stole them ... would you feel the same then?! why should i spend my wages when i can steal your stuff?! we'll just have to agree to disagree rocket, otherwise we'll just go back and forth! i just hope you ain't downloading none of our stuff! anyway, i thought this was a forum for growing bud?
