No one song changed the world; but a combination of songs woke people up-like' For What It's Worth' Sargent Pepper' and many war protest songs by Joan Baez' Dylan' etc. In the 60s the war was raging and for a while it was "us against them"-some folks were for stopping the war and some weren't' but fortunately and finally most people in America said enough is enough! It didn't matter who or what you believed in; but evryone knew the war was wrong--so' yea that song and many others swayed public opinion-
Bob Dylan woke up so many people at a time when America was still so square and button down Maddison Avenue,... And he spoke truths when most people listened to bubble gum love post Elvis rock and roll that said the same thing over and over again. When World War two ended, people just wanted to settle down and live quiet lives, (after all that death and carnage, who could blame them?) But Bob Dylan learned his craft from a number of people "Woody Guthrie" to name one,....and while most tried to avoid thinking of things like,.. Racial injustice. Obsession with money. Nuclear destruction. He didn't. It was what he said. And how he said it. Hendrix swore by him. Dylan told John Lennon,.. "You guys are great, but your not saying anything with your music",...then followed Rubber Soul,..and Revolver,..and SGT PEPPER. His music (especially today, when style seems to have drowned out ANY substance) Is still stinging, and fresh, and fucking REAL!!!
Bob Dylan? The most cerebral music that has ever made the top 40. Dylan's voice has never been much to boast of, but his writing and tunesmithing remain unmatched. A lot of people would scream and cry whenever Dylan took a new direction but Dylan refused to become typecasted. Joan Baez never forgave Bob for veering away from social protest into cornpone in the late sixties, but cornpone was never the same after Dylan came through. My favorite Dylan album was "Desire" back in the seventies and "Blood on the Tracks" before that was pretty good too. The earlier stuff is pretty timeless also. TH
It takes more then one song to shake the population into taking affirmative action to make changes-The government only makes changes when the majority of the public is demanding it-I believe right now we should be breaking down the political party differences and uniting as one nation to stop this war and bring home our people. Then we should come together as a nation to save the enviroment-all electric vehicles-no more fighting for oil-it is not worth dying for -right now; gas is 3.00$ a gallon and going up-Our government should take the war money and develop more alternatives that do not require cutting trees or polluting the air-how much longer do we stay at war and when do we begin the saving of the planet?-Priorities!-choose life over death!
High, I agree--we thought of Dylan as a prophet..changed a lot of our minds as did all the other beat poets of the time. "Like A Rolling Stone" was a Mantra...a song that identified us as we became gypsy wanderer's in search of (you name it) My favorite albums are all his albums until John Wesley Harding..we all love "Lay Lady Lay" though--uh huh--so sweet! My favorite album is "Blond on Blonde" Peace LionHeart Here you go robspace2.. It's AllRight Ma -(I'm Only Bleeding) by Bob Dylan Darkness at the break of noon Shadows even the silver spoon The handmade blade, the child's balloon Eclipses both the sun and moon To understand you know too soon There is no sense in trying. Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn Suicide remarks are torn From the fool's gold mouthpiece The hollow horn plays wasted words Proves to warn That he not busy being born Is busy dying. Temptation's page flies out the door You follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar You feel to moan but unlike before You discover That you'd just be One more person crying. So don't fear if you hear A foreign sound to your ear It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing. As some warn victory, some downfall Private reasons great or small Can be seen in the eyes of those that call To make all that should be killed to crawl While others say don't hate nothing at all Except hatred. Disillusioned words like bullets bark As human gods aim for their mark Made everything from toy guns that spark To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark It's easy to see without looking too far That not much Is really sacred. While preachers preach of evil fates Teachers teach that knowledge waits Can lead to hundred-dollar plates Goodness hides behind its gates But even the president of the United States Sometimes must have To stand naked. An' though the rules of the road have been lodged It's only people's games that you got to dodge And it's alright, Ma, I can make it. Advertising signs that con you Into thinking you're the one That can do what's never been done That can win what's never been won Meantime life outside goes on All around you. You lose yourself, you reappear You suddenly find you got nothing to fear Alone you stand with nobody near When a trembling distant voice, unclear Startles your sleeping ears to hear That somebody thinks They really found you. A question in your nerves is lit Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy Insure you not to quit To keep it in your mind and not fergit That it is not he or she or them or it That you belong to. Although the masters make the rules For the wise men and the fools I got nothing, Ma, to live up to. For them that must obey authority That they do not respect in any degree Who despise their jobs, their destinies Speak jealously of them that are free Cultivate their flowers to be Nothing more than something They invest in. While some on principles baptized To strict party platform ties Social clubs in drag disguise Outsiders they can freely criticize Tell nothing except who to idolize And then say God bless him. While one who sings with his tongue on fire Gargles in the rat race choir Bent out of shape from society's pliers Cares not to come up any higher But rather get you down in the hole That he's in. But I mean no harm nor put fault On anyone that lives in a vault But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him. Old lady judges watch people in pairs Limited in sex, they dare To push fake morals, insult and stare While money doesn't talk, it swears Obscenity, who really cares Propaganda, all is phony. While them that defend what they cannot see With a killer's pride, security It blows the minds most bitterly For them that think death's honesty Won't fall upon them naturally Life sometimes Must get lonely. My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards False gods, I scuff At pettiness which plays so rough Walk upside-down inside handcuffs Kick my legs to crash it off Say okay, I have had enough What else can you show me? And if my thought-dreams could be seen They'd probably put my head in a guillotine But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.
Blackie; A pretty impressive body of work allright. And the guy was able to go anywhere a. Case in point; off the "Desire" album he did a Latin and a Judaic love song and did them both better than anyone. Then his "Joey" song off the same album fueled speculation he owed the Mob a thing or two-but I doubt Bob owes anyone anywhere much of anything. BOB DYLAN - Romance In Durango Lyrics Hot chilli peppers in the blistering sun Dust on my face and my cape Me and Magdalena on the run I think this time we shall escape. Sold my guitar to the baker's son For a few crumbs and a place to hide But I can get another one And I'll play for Magdalena as we ride. No llores mi querida Dios nos vigila Soon the horse will take us to Durango Agarrame mi vida Soon the desert will be gone Soon you will be dancing the fandango. Past the Aztec ruins and the ghosts of our people Hoofbeats like castanets on stone At night I dream of bells in the village steeple Then I see the bloody face of Ramona. Was it me that shot him down in the cantina Was it my hand that held the gun ? Come let us fly my Magdalena The dogs are barking and what's done is done. No llores mi querida Dios nos vigila Soon the horse will take us to Durango Agarrame mi vida Soon the desert will be gone Soon you will be dancing the fandango. At the corrida we'll sit in the shade And watch the young torero stand alone We'll drink tequila where our grandfathers stayed When they rode with Villa into Torre6n. Then the padre will recite the prayers of old In the little church this side of town I will wear new boots and an earring of gold You'll shine with diamonds in your wedding gown. The way is long but the end is near Already the fiesta has begun The face of God will appear With His serpent eyes of obsidian. No llores mi querida Dios nos vigila Soon the horse will take us to Durango Agarrame mi vida Soon the desert will be gone Soon you will be dancing the fandango. Was that the thunder that I heard My head is vibrating, I feel a sharp pain Come sit by me don't say a word Oh can it be that I am slain ? Quick, Magdalena, take my gun Look up in the hills that flash of light Aim well my little one We may not make it through the night. No llores mi querida Dios nos vigila Soon the horse will take us to Durango Agarrame mi vida Soon the desert will be gone Soon you will be dancing the fandango. BOB DYLAN - One More Cup Of Coffee Lyrics Your breath is sweet Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky Your back is straight your hair is smooth On the pillow where you lie But I don't sense affection No gratitude or love Your loyalty is not to me But to the stars above One more cup of coffee for the road One more cup of coffee 'fore I go. To the valley below. Your daddy he's an outlaw And a wanderer by trade He'll teach you how to pick and choose And how to throw the blade He oversees his kingdom So no stranger does intrude His voice it trembles as he calls out For another plate of food. One more cup of coffee for the road One more cup of coffee 'fore I go. To the valley below. Your sister sees the future Like your mama and yourself You've never learned to read or write There's no books upon your shelf And your pleasure knows no limits Your voice is like a meadowlark But your heart is like an ocean Mysterious and dark. One more cup of coffee for the road One more cup of coffee 'fore I go. To the valley below. TH
