Hi there im an Artist from the states moving to Amsterdam soon to start a new job soon I know all about the coffeeshops and such, but life isnt all about drugs so what else is there to do? I plan on checking out the Van Gogh Museum,Anne Frank's House,RLD was wondering what else is there to do? Im 26 years old and an artistic type so that can give you a general idea of what i like and dont.Music, art, girls, bier, girls Also who are the supermarkets, i hear the food at Restuarants can be expensive so i dont plan that on being a regular thing ill do,is there a decent collection of food like chicken, beef, vegetables? im hearing if i want a little flavor also will i have to bring some spices with me from the states?
Say 'pils' not bier. You don't have to bring spices. They have supermarkets. Actually the dutch probably own the supermarket you go to whereever it is you live.
What type of artist are you, if you don't mind me asking. Have you got a nice job to go to. Oh how I envy you.
You are joking me.! That sounds like the best job in the world.LOL Is it a big company or not.? I've studied graphics myself and would love to get into something like that. Great stuff
Not a real big company 35 or so employees alot of expatswork there due to fact the kind of workers you need are not found in holland in large quantities
yeah you are definately going to miss some of the stuff you are used to but at the same time you get to experience a bunch of new shit. expect the unexpected over there becuase even though it looks similar it is extremely different.
Cheers, I know Photoshop like the back of my hand and some Flash, Quark, Freehand, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc. I'll check out 3D Studio Max. Anyway, have a good one
listen to mafuman. his very valuable advice comes for years of vicariously living in amsterdam through this forum.
LOL! Glad to hear there's enough nutrients in this forum to survive on! That's more than I can say for the streets of Amsterdam... hehe.
Jo420, there are good supermarkets around. I really liked the Vomar as they have a decent selection of organic & health & imported foods, they were way cheaper than Albert Hein (when I was there, I hear AH is cheaper than b4). Don't forget to check out your local market or the Albert Cuyp markt for a big choice of food. There were only a couple of things like salsa that were missing, although now Mexican food is available everywhere I go, at least a couple of big American brands. I make my own salsa if I can't find it so that's not a problem. Somethings have different names, like maple syrup is called Ahorn stroop. Hey the dutch even have peanut butter everywhere (cheap too). You can thank the Indonesians for that, I think. Just don't ask what the Dutch have for breakfast! If you ever get to stay with the dutch, you might want to make your own! There are foods that the Dutch do great! Cheese, chocolate, coffee are as good or better in Holland than anywhere on the planet, and cheap (unless you go to Puccinis, which has some of the best chocolate in the universe!) As for eating out, yes it is relatively expensive cause you either pay about 6 euros for a sandwich, falafel, or other such lunch type food or you go straight to spending 30 euros for a meal. But you must splurge and try an Indonesian Ristaffel and Thai and Chinese food as it's all great in Amsterdam. One more benefit of immigration that the dutch too easily forget. Otherwise you'd be stuck eating Stompot all the fucking time!
I can't seem to add up these two.. typical Dutch breakfast is slices of bread with various things on them.. like cheese or chocolatespread.. usually accompanied by a cup of coffee (or milk, tea, juice.. whatever).. so.. ehm.. what are you complaining about?
I don't like breakfast. Usually I take yoghurt, or a krentebol: or an eierkoek: or ontbijtkoek: or borrelnootjes:
Ontbijtkoek.. yummm Especially with butter.. but.. borrelnootjes (party snacks basically) as breakfast? hehehe.. ok.. that's.. different
See, I rest my case! btw, I was thinking of my friends favorite breakfast, white bread with butter, sugar & colored sprinkles. Or nutella. Americans, Aussies & Brits, now doesn't that sound yummy for BREAKFAST?
