my new adopted pup lily (she's about 8mths) has a little problem with using the bathroom on the carpet. its not that she doesnt know to go outside...she does pee and stuff when i take her out, but she's got a very little bladder and tends to go in intervals.....she will pee a little and then 10-15 min later pee a little more. what i need her to do is tell me when she needs to be taken out~ my other dog daisy cries at the door if she has to go, and ive had daisy for 10 yrs now so i cant remember at all how she learned to do that. i actually think it just came natural for her..... how do i train lily to do the same? its not a problem that a crate could solve (i dont believe in crates anyway...just another word for cage) i do take her in my room with me at night and she sleeps thru the night, but then will pee on the carpet during the day when im not home or when i am home...doesnt matter to her when i catch her in the act i pick her up and we go outside together, but she's not catching on........
Punishment and reward system. Smack the puppy on the nose when it does something bad. Give treats when it does'nt pee, or lets you know it has to.
there is no way in hell id ever smack, hit or swat my animals.....never ever. besides that being just cruel, it wont teach them anything, instead it will just make them afraid and wondering when their next "smack" is going to come. animals trust and depend on you to love and care for them....being physical with them (spanking) is breaking that trust. the problem is she doesnt let me know she has to pee, thats what i need her to do. if she ever did let me know, id surely reward her but she doesnt. i do always praise her when she pees outside, she knows to go outdoors, but she also goes inside as well.
It was just a punishment example. Then jump around and yell incoherently, since animals don't speak english, so the dog realizes it's bad.
Its bad idea to hit your dogs, especially on the head. Their more susceptible (sp?) to turning on you in the future, or will be afraid to let people pet them on the head. A stearn voice will suffice. As for the whole potty training thing, puppies like to imitate other adult dogs, reward Daisy with treats when she lets you know when she needs to go out, the pup will see that and eventually figure that she will get the same reward if she does the same. I hope this helps and good luck.
that's a good idea.....i'll try that. thanks edit: i just thought the only problem with that is that lily has some food aggression issues with the other animals...so i dunno that it'd be a good idea to give daisy a treat and not lily, know what i mean? every time i feed them something they both get equal because i dont want lily's aggression problem to worsen...im trying to show her that she doesnt need to compete for food here like shes had to in the past.
If she sees Daisy getting a treat when she lets you know when she needs to go out, Lily will imitate that, and a pattern will develop as to where both will start going out at the same time. Thats how it is with my dogs anyway. It will work, you'll see.
