(Eh I already posted this on the 'Young Hippies' forum before I found out this one existed! So forgive me for reposting, I thought this part of the board might have some different insights I'd need to hear) The month of August has presented me with quite the uh dilemma. I've been accepted to a university in New York City, but I'm not sure if my family will be able to afford it.. I missed the dorm application deadline, so I'll have to look into staying with friends, renting rooms at the Y, etc.. very gritty existence. But I think it might be good for me, although it will be very difficult.. Or I can go to community college at home.. save up, have a few months of relative relaxation, save some money, take some time to prepare, have fun and travel, buy books and music.. THEN make my getaway for the big city..
Have you contacted the proper office to find out if they accept late applications, if maybe some students have signed up then changed their minds? Have you looked into financial aid to help your family pay for college?
I disagree with the above poster. Community College is a great idea if you're not sure what you want to major in! Better to spend less money on general requirements anyway! I say stick at home for as long as possible. That's the advice I got and I'm pretty happy with the decision I made. I went to community college for two years. Had a great time. Ended up being a great transition between high school and college. CAUTION: Make sure you know that those credits will transfer from community college to the university. I had a few credits that didn't end up transferring, which set me back a semester. Good luck!
You can always take out student loans if your family cannot afford the tuition, don't miss out on a great education opp. Also if you are looking for roommates in NYC craigslist.org is a great place to start. You will need a roommate to live here because rent is very expensive especially if you live in the city (Manhattan) but the other borros (Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn) have some inexpensive apts, but Queens is way out and the public trans system isn't that great there.
