Petrolium jelly? That's the only association I can make...I have no idea about dred wax.

I have dreads, this is my second attempt. The first time I used " Lets Dred" brand wax, and my hair was too greasy and my dreads unraveled. The second time, I used KnottyBoy. I really love the outcome. I also use the shampoo, and I love this product as well. I could tell you a lot about dreads, but I think it would be best to visit the knottyboy site, www.knottyboy.com . There you will find an extensive FAQ page, and a lot more.

Oh and the main ingredient of dread wax is usually bees wax, not sure about petrolium...

If you don't use wax at all you'll be better off.

does anyone know of someone in Canada (in or around Vancouver up to maybe 2 hours away) who does natural dreads other than knottybuy store?

i know they can be done on myself or by a friend - but i don't trust either.

    thanks:)

TelimTor I am glad I was a help to you! Good luck on your soon to be born hairstyle! Patience is important, they might not even start to look cool until a month. I suggest using bandanas to cover up the tough days. Also HUGE piece of advice not listed on Knotty boy ( cuz I invented it ;) )... Try not to wash your dreads for two whole weeks, or at least one week. I lasted two weeks. My scalp would itch a lot at night, so this is what I did. This is my little secret: I got my scalp damp, and slept really close to my fan set on high. It was very refreshing and relieved a lot of the itch, and it ultimately allowed me to sleep at night!

    *SCREAMS* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

arg geese people do you not do your research!!!! ARG!!! i researched into dreads for 2 years before getting them (ive had them almost 6 months so they are still babies) and this is what i found out.
Basically ANY product you put in your dreads, any wax, or shampoo or ANYTHING will stay in your dreads FOREVER! obviously bits will wash out but inside those beautiful dreadies you had will lie a think layer of goo built up ovver the years. this goo will go mouldy and smell. Hence why so many people have to cut off their dreadlocks because they smell. so any product with chemicals in it or oils in it that are designed to stay in your hair (petrolium is one of them) should be avoided, stick to the most natural stuff and wax in totaly you should avoid because it stays in for ever and it doesnt help knott the dreads it just sticks the hairs down. To dread your hair needs to move, as it gorws the hair naturally knotts itself in with other hairsif u put wax in it cloggy up the hairs and although it gives you a "dreaded effect" its actualy just gooed down.

I recomend NO wax.. if you want more reasons or more peoples advice visit http://www.knottylocks.tk almost everyone on there will agree with me. Wax is BAD!!
Natural is the best way to go!
As for starting the dreads there are many methods You can section it and back comb it, you can wool rub it, you can leave it to do it itself and just rip and shape it. I did an initial back combing, left it for 4 months and now im playing about twith them a bit, i made them a bit to thin when i started them so nnow they are not as thick as i wanted but they will thicken up over years.
As for itches, the best way to cure an itchy scalp is to rub Teetree oil onto your scalp (only natural teetree not general hair products with it in, because these like wax have chemicals that are designed to stay in your hair) If your dreads begin to get too dry (from lack of conditioning as you cant use any conditioner on your hair, especially at first and it leaves the hair greasy and the knotts slip out) then use Aloe Vera extract, its recomended to take it from the plat yourself that way its in its purest form.
As for washing your dreadlocks DO wash them. If you dont the natural greases does the same as a conditioner does, it helps the knotts slide out. I recomend, even if you just was them with water a couple of times a week that you DO wash them. I washed with water for 4 months then i bought a handmade soap from LUSH that was recomended to be by someone with dreads, its Juniper soap. designed for greasy hair it removes natural greases...even with this i am dubious about oils sticking in my dreads so i do it haldf and half sometimes just with water but if ive been out and my dreads stick of fags or soemthing i will use the juniper soap.

My advice is check out the above forum mentioned it gave me a LOT of help.
Your dreads wont begin to mature for at least half a year and at about 2/3 months they will probably look their worst and you will consider giving up... dont :p
Dreads are beautiful thinks, they are natural and grow like the root of a tree, in any which way they please, aside from basic ripping you have no control over them :) thats what i love everyones dreads look different and personal to them :)
    good luck!

I had dreads for only 2 months, (I got them done in Jamaica,) and they were pretty awesome. It was a huge pain to get out. I laid on the couch screaming and crying as my man ripped chucnks out of my head, :) Oh well, I wouldn't give up the experience for anything. Dreads are any awesome hassel-free way of having your hair. I have a lot of friends that have natural dreads and it was taken some as much as 4 yr to get fully formed beautiful dreads. All I can say is if you got 'em, work 'em!

fleassy, someone FINALLY said it! thanks...

wax will do nothing buy harm to your dreads. basically, the more you fuck with them in ANY WAY, the worse off they´ll be.

and speaking of wax and other things staying in your dreads, check out the attached picture. a friend of mine cut his locks off, then cut one in half and that´s what he saw. so it´s your choice if you want that shit in there or not.

the easiest way to get dreads is to just stop coming your hair.

Wax sucks balls. I hate even having to touch that shit. I think all it's good for is the vain peeps out there that want their locks to appear smooth but don't wanna wait for it to happen naturally. I did Sprout's locks, and I think they turned out pretty well considering it was my first time doing someone's entire head. (that ungrateful bastid :p )

Leave the rubber bands and wax alone! You don't need to go to the knotty boy or dreadheadHQ sites, all you need is a fine tooth comb and a LOT of patience!

I found a great bar of all natural shampoo by the brand J.R. Liggett. It made my hair so clean and shiny, and fluffy. With conventional liquid shampoos, my hair tends to smell funny and is greasy the next day. But I was able to skip washing my hair for a couple days without it being greasy or smelly at all. I used the original formula but there is also a tea tree/hemp oil formula that I'm guessing would be GREAT for dreads. This link shows the different formulas if anyone's interested in the ingredients or anything: http://www.jrliggett.com/what/
