how would i go about hosting other peoples sites. i.e. geocities, freeservers, angelfire, etc. do i just buy alot of of space from a major host and let other people buy space from me or is there a way i can sell my own space and how hard would this be.
People won't buy your space cause they could buy it themselves where you bought it A possibility would be that you set up a PC at your home, run a server program on it and sell the HD space... but people would not pay for it cause they can have webspace for free and with a higher bandwith all over the Internet
To do it properly, you'd purchase rack-space in a managed facility. So basically, you purchase a server, fit it into a rack that you rent in a co-located server room, and your chosen ISP provide connectivity to their backbone and a certain level of support depending on your contract (things such as physical reboots etc). You'd usually manage it via Remotely Anywhere or something similar. You could then sell space on your co-located server, and be able to configure it all from the comfort of your own home.
You can also become a "Reseller" for major hosting companies that allow you to buy space for a great discount and reselling packages for whatever you like. I am a reseller for these guys. >>Click<< This allows me to to have my own hosting company >>Here<<
You could just get a server setup at Rackspace...they manage everything, all you'd really have to do is sell the space and bandwidth.
thanks you guys. the last 2 is sorta what i figured the 3rd to last went a bit over my head. and the first post...they didnt know what there talking about... thanks guys.
You can install a server on your computer but you should have a broadband or DSL connection and a DNS which will cost a bit of money. Setting up a server is free but you HAVE to have a good firewall like Norton Internet Security. Being a reseller is the easist....
