i'm going to take libertine's side on this one. originally, there was no "Holy Spirit" as a persona; there was only God and "God's Breath", which was literally breath or wind. Breath gives life, and so the 'holy spirit' was the material thing that gave things dynamic life and special gifts from God. in exodus the breath was a 'blast from God's nostrils' that parted the sea. methinks the men of ancient time were puzzled by this invisible wind and assumed that it was God's breath. (perhaps the rain was God's tears, too? or spittle? yuck!) unlike modern thinking, the Holy Spirit didn't have some sort of persona of its own, and it woudn't make sense to pray to it, as it was God's breath. people always say, "I felt the Holy Spirit's presence," and "I'll pray to the Holy Spirit this that and the other thing". whaa? i don't think there's any instance in the OT, if in the whole bible itself, where anyone prays to the Holy Spirit. Originally, there was only 1 single god, not a one-in-three. that didn't start til much later, with the growing popularity of dualism, post Plato. As in, there's one Ultimate God and one mediating god between the first, and the world. The Holy Spirit fit right in there, and so people started thinking of it as a Person. Along comes Jesus and they fit him in, too, and voila! Trinity.
ehh... corners seems to denote an end. in fact, the phrase "ends of the earth" is used often and what about talk of 'foundation' and 'pillars'? it would have made more sense to use the term "directions" or something, rather than "corners". and about the whole, bible says the earth is round, bit... are you talking about isaiah 40 where it says 'circle of the earth'? because if you read it, it says pretty much that the earth is a circle, (not a sphere..more like a big flat circle) and god stretches a big canopy over it, which is the heavens, like a tent. peace
"and it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away! than for one tittle of the law to fail." ??? same passage, but i get that the law remains, until the end comes.
haha, yeah yeah, but picture this: ok so i have this big circle, and i'm taking a big blue tent and stretching it over the circle, like a tent. and inside is a bunch of cute little yahoos. what do you picture? i see a flat circle, covered with a tent. a flat earth, covered with the heavens. not a spherical planet floating in enormous space, along with other equal and larger planets, and stars...... a whole different picture.
hi the fact that it says in the bible that the earth is a circle doesn't prove anything about the bible as it was already known years before t he bible existed that the earth was round- but it was a sin to believe that. this is from a book i have about ancient sites - thsi bit is about stonehenge- " the french architect G.charriere noted in 1961, as did newham and gerald hawkins independently in 1963, that the astronomical alignments marked at stonehenge cross at right angles, and thus generate the rectangle (station stone rectangle) because of the latitude at which stonehenge is located. this virtually regular figure could not be produced if stonehenge wre situated much further north or south, if the ground level were different or if the horizon altitude other than it is around the site. the implications of this are that the builders of stonehenge had a knowledge of the global nature of the earth!" so isn't it possible that some of the things in the bible that are said to be proof of the bible because how else would the people have known about those things, have already been known about before the bible existed and then they were just written in there ?
That's true, ancient cultures were very intelligent. I mean, just look at the Pyramids! Our ancestors weren't dumb, in fact, it seems to me like they were much more intelligent than we are today. We just happen to have more resources.
hi exactly - they definitely were very intelligent, so why do some people allways assume that if something like about the earth being round is written in the bible then it must mean that the bible is true bacause how else could the peopel of those days know about it? peace and love issy
