How many people do you know that will throw out or give away bikes, toys, furniture, kitchen appliances or clothes when there is nothing wrong with them just so they can go out and buy new ones?

I'm living in Kingman,AZ at the moment....also known as "yard sale heaven"
Kingman also has lots of spots where people will just throw out stoves, tons of cardboard boxes, and whatever else they are sick of at the moment.

Whatever happened to the old ads/bumper stickers telling us to
    Reduce, Recycle, & Reuse?

i know EXACTLY what you mean. i used to sell stuff i dumpster dived and trash dug on ebay for cash, now i just give it to the salvation army to get tax deductions for my mom. even the salvation army probably tosses a lot of stuff i give them since ive seen their thrift store around here and it only carries the finest goods. i think they give some to poor people as well, i hope so anyway. i know lots of them take the good stuff for themselves unfortunatley, but its still better than just throwing it away. even im too lazy to make sure everything i find finds a home, its almost like this culture makes it difficult to be kind and truely considerate with everything you do. dont get me wrong, i still do lots of kind creative things with what i find and i try to do everything within my power, im still only human. i think its true metaphorically as well, were ultimatley going to just throw ourselves away with this destructive culture of ours...

haha, i have one of those bumper stickers!

anyways, I also know what you mean. Saw some bikes out in the garbage a few weeks ago while I was walking my dog one morning. It pissed me off because I was going to go back and check them out and maybe salvage them, at least for parts, but the garbage truck came down right behind me and took them. I was irritated, to say the least.

Oklahoma department of Environmental Quality had stickers that really got at the problem. They read: Use less stuff.

At least with yard sales someone is using it. and I have to admit without second-hand, I'd not have much at all!

Thrift/secondhand stores and yard sales are a great idea if you've got stuff you don't need and don't want to throw away....but the real problem is why you've got the unnecessary stuff in the first place. What bothers me even more, though, is our apparent obsession with single use EVERYTHING! We've got disposable razors, diapers, cutlery, paper towels, etc, and virtually everything we buy comes swathed in plastic or cardboard so far removed from the tree it came from that it's hardly an environmentally friendly way of packaging anything anyway. I hate it!!!!

One thing i really hate seeing is all the dirty disposable diapers strewn on the side of the road after a long weekend. Disposable diapers should be banned! All babies should be put in cloth diapers.

I moved to NH...left AZ on greyhound bus. Even I would not have wanted to ride for 3 days smelling cloth diapers. Some buses have no sink in the bathrooms to wash out a cloth diaper.
Some daycares also won't deal with cloth diapers in this country (USA).

It's ridiculous how our society just wastes things. This fact will blow your mind: the United States composes 4% of the earth's population, but consumes about 25% of everything consumed by the entre planet.

49 million diapers EVERY F__KING DAY (according to Oprah). And you can't reclaim any of the materials from those kinds of diapers either.
Circuit boards are almost equally bad, plus you have the silicon.
    Neither of them degrade.
Both are always being produced, distributed, used and thrown away at ever-increasing rates.

The garbage can is the ultimate solution for today's household.
    Disgusting.
