Well, there isn't much more to say. I haven't been allowed to go anywhere. I miss walking. I feel so gross, just sitting around all day, doing nothing.

*sigh* And school's gonna start on Wednesday. I'm positive my administrators are not going to take kindly to me being barefoot. A "hazard to myself and others" and "against school policy". There's absolutely nothing in the handbook regarding footwear, as far as I can remember, but we do have segments stating "anything that can be reasonably found as offensive or hazardous by a faculty member is against code".

I'm gonna have to figure out a way to argue myself out of that one.

    Any idears?

Since there is nothing in the handbook about footwear then you can reasonably say to the administrators and show them that being barefoot is not against school policy because if the school policy required you to wear shoes then it would say so in the handbook. Being barefoot is not a hazard to you or others because if you go barefoot enough your feet with toughen up enough not to get hurt and your less likely to hurt others being barefoot than you would wear shoes. Stepping on or hitting someone with bare feet would hurt alot less than wearing shoes would. Also your feet stay cleaner that way because your feet dont have a dark warm moist place *i.e inside of a shoe* for bacteria to grow that would make your feet dirty and cause a health hazard for you. Theres plenty of reasons why going barefoot is more practical and there are lots of resources online about this. I would suggest just getting some of this material together and presenting it to the administrator and arguing your point to them. If you wanna go barefoot at school bad enough then do what you gotta do to make it happen.

Well, today was the first day of school. I checked, one of the rules is "Footwear must be worn at all times."

I was barefoot the entire day. Plenty of people asked all the usual questions.. with varying responses, from "Dude.. that's awesome, I love you, Lena" to "Uh... right. That's gross."

I had to go into the office and one teacher noticed I had no shoes.. She was like, "Where are your shoes?" ...I'm not wearing them. "Well you have to! You might step on something! You have to wear shoes!" If this school is reasonably clean, then there'll be nothing for me to step on, have a nice day.

One of my teachers asked me if I was afraid I'd step on glass. I said it was no biggie, I can walk across glass without a problem. And there shouldn't be broken glass lying around our school, anyway.

I'm going to go barefoot again tomorrow. I really need to figure out how to get past that stupid required footwear rule. Maybe I'll crochet myself some hemp flip flops or something.

There are any number of "barefoot sandals" that you can find if you google that term. Basically they're a cover for the top of your foot, but leave your sole bare. They don't usually pass muster if people scrutinize your feet...but hey, the rule says "footwear"...there's no qualification on what that means to them so you can argue that even though they might be soleless footwear, they're still footwear.

Knowing that I'd be surprised if they still didn't try to make you conform to "their" idea of footwear. Let us know how things go!

Hey Toolmaggot! You actually did it! Good for you. With a well off suburbia high school such as with Westlake, it surprises me that you weren't sent home after some shoes. Try that with Magnificat High School!

Matthew made an excellent suggestion, and that is barefoot sandals. Trust me, they have worked in my case. Just this past month I went into a Walgreens wearing some BF sandals made of black leather straps, which looks like I'm wearing sandals but leaves your soles bare. The manager said he liked my shoes!

Another thing you might want to try is wearing a pair of bell bottom jeans!

    Keep 'em bare.

That's one thing I never understand. I must be the only person ever whose soles are never pink. Must just be me~

    Nice stories :)
As for the school: I think you are right about wide jeans, or any other kind of long pants that cover your feet a bit.
I haven't worn shoes for almost two months now myself, and never had much trouble anywhere so far. Pants definitely help :)
I plan to stay barefoot for as long as I can, which probably means "until it gets way too cold" (I hope it would be a while: I did go barefoot for about a week this April, including a couple days in low 40's, and as long as I kept warm otherwise bare feet were not a problem...)
    Good luck!

Whatever works for her. She's to be congratulated, that's for sure! As for me, I'm such a strong shorts person that I can't imagine ever putting on long pants for any reason, even to get away with bare feet, but for those who don't mind longs------I guess whatever works. Probably my insistence on being both shorts and bf is what draws the relatively small amount of bad attention I put up with, but that's me.

Since it's been warm I've gone barefoot nearly every place...and for the most part, no one really seems to notice all that much. I go to class barefoot and I've not had one person comment on it. I don't know if it's they don't WANT to say anything because they think it's weird, they didn't notice, or they don't really care.

Something that does bug me about public places that require shoes is...their concern is that we are going to step on something...do you think if you're wearing flip flops it's really going to protect all that much? Hell I wore flip flops a three or four summers ago and stepped on a nail and it went through my foot. Obviously those flip flops didn't protect me...may as well have gone barefoot! I've seen flip flops that are so thin, if you stepped on a piece of glass it probably would go right through to your foot.

    some people make no sense...

Annie, after seeing those schoolgirl pictures in your gallery, and then your post talking about being barefoot in class...

...well let's just say that I am seriously tempted to go back to school...in Michigan. :p

 OUCH...err...my wife just swatted me.

Oh man. Second day of school.. Wore a floor-length skirt. I was walking into my third period class. Office lady sees me, starts literally SCREAMING at me for not wearing shoes. I was about ready to start screaming back, but instead just said, "Well then, to shut you up, why don't I just go into my class, put my shoes on, and continue with my day?" "NO, you have to come to the office, we're going to talk to the assistant principal. If you go barefoot, you're going to get a detention, and we'll send you home!" "As far as I can see, not wearing shoes is simply a violation of the dress code. Dress code violations are not punishable by detentions, even after repeat offenses." "Come with me right now, I don't want any more mouth from you!" "I thought this was about my feet." ... I just love cynicism.

We get into Klinar's office.. "Mr. Klinar, I told this girl yesterday that she wasn't allowed to be barefoot in the school and she STILL refuses to wear shoes. Will you deal with her?" ... And she left.

"What the hell's wrong with you? You're not wearing shoes?"
"No, I'm not. And there is nothing wrong with me, thank you."
"You just didn't wear shoes to school? What are you doing? We're gonna have to send you home."
"No you don't. I have flip flops. I don't understand the need for them, though."
"It's a safety hazard. You have to wear shoes."
"Safety hazard? I can walk across glass barefoot with no problems, and if I were to step on something, a half inch of foam isn't going to stop anything."
"It's a school rule. Put shoes on or we'll send you home. Go to class."

So, I've crocheted a pair of hemp sandals. If they still make remarks, I very well might explode.

I'd forgotten how stuffy school can be...I remember when I was going to business college they wanted me to dress up (wear suits and ties)...my response was "I will dress up when you are paying me, but not while I'm paying you." In other words, fuck 'em!!
