Occasionally, after waking up, I try to speak but I can't make any sound, when I was younger I used to find this very scary. I tried to shout out for me mum but, I couldn't hear the words, and neither could she. Strange.

It is also very hard to make a tight fist when you first wake up. If you can remember, try it.

Thats hapened to me a few times, but more often I'll wake up and be unabel to move... it's freaky. I'll try to move but it'll feel as if I'm chained down. Somrtimes this feeling will last for up to 30 minutes, but it usally lasts for less than 7... it's wierd...

Also, I'll have to try that fist thing once.

Yeah man i used to have that happen to me but i never really looked into it, i think it is just because your right side(creative side) i think is still in a like sleepy state of mind, so its kinda not fully functioning. So after about a minute or 2 you should be fine.
I dont really think its like somthing you should really worry about, but i dunno thats just what I think causes it, but could be because you eat to many Baked Cabagges, i have no idea lol.

    Peace and Love

Yeah it happened to me... it's because the speech and motion parts of the brain are still inactive after you wake up from REM sleep, just for a few seconds. Your body is paralysed when you dream, so you can't move your mouth to talk... or kinda, like when people mumble when they dream, the reason why they mumble is because they can't really open their mouth.

It has happened to me several times, and I thought it meant there was something really wrong with me. Has anyone here ever had the distinct feeling of not being alone in bed when you were alone in bed?

It's called Sleep Paralysis. I've had this for years now, it happens every once in a while, but less and less frequent as you get older. I researched it a little but it's something like when your in REM sleep the brain makes chemicals so that you cant move while your sleeping, so you dont act out your dreams. Sometimes when you wake up the brain is still producing these chemicals, and as a result you cant move, it feels like your awake but your body just cant move. And usually when you try and yell it comes out as a little wimper. Sometimes people feel like theres things in the room with them while this is happening, kinda scary. Best way to get out of it is to try moving your fingers or toes or something little, then your whole arm and you'll eventually just jump out of it.

    Nouronion,

Thank you very much! That's a weight off my shoulders. It makes me wonder if some people who claim to have been visited aliens in their sleep are experiencing something similar.

*laughs* made me think rude things.
I often wake and can't move and I get a lot of sleep weirdness anyway because of my meds - Vivid dreams and very freaky ones at that.

yeah ive read alot about sleep paralysis, you tend to get it alot when u practise lucid dreaming. also if your practising astral projection you can sometimes feel the sleep paralysis come on, it feels like a wave of energy sweeps thru your body. lucky for me im pretty lazy so i dont try and move so i never notice that i wouldnt be able to anyway, but some people panic when they cant. i have read about people waking up with sleep paralysis and cus your mind is still in half dream mode you can have strange things goin on in your room, like people talking to you on the feeling liek someones sat on your chest. theres things written about it from hundreds of yrs ago, i think they used to call it a night hag or summin, cus it was like having a old hag sat on your chest. best thing is to just lie there and not try to move i reckon, and itll pass.
i love all this stuff, its my hobby
this is good website if anyones intrested in astral travel. http://www.astralweb.org/

It is freaky - because it's like being stuck in a Freddy Kruger movie. But then, these are the kinds of dreams they stole ideas from to make the movies so freakishly scary and real!

I'd rather experience this horrid inability to move, than the horrid sick feeling and regular waking I am getting at the moment. I am not getting much sleep and am having bad nausea all through the evening and night whether I eat late or not. Dammit!

Ever wake up finding out a part of your body is asleep because you slept on it all night, like your arm? I woke up yesterday my arm totally asleep, you can't move it all. Its happened to me several times before, but its kinda scary. If it wasn't for just that little bit I can feel my arm I would be totally freaked out.

the craziest sleep paralysis experience ive had was when i took a nap in my parents hotel room. i dreamt that i woke up in the hotel room, and went on a walk downtown with my parents, and as we were crossin the street, i realized i was about to fall asleep right then and there. i tried to tell my dad to catch me before i fell, but that didnt work. i was lying on the pavement with my eyes closed, and i was still awake, but had a gnarly case of sleep paralysis. but i could see through my eyelids. and i was trying to tell my folks to shake me awake, but whenever i tried to speak, my vocal cords and mouth didnt work, but there was a crazy colorful demon standing next to me translating my attempts to speak into demon language. then i switched from having sleep paralysis in the middle of the road in my dream, to being back in the hotel room (i couldnt see through my eyelids anymore). so i tried to tell my mom, who was reading a few feet way, to wake me up. and i guess it worked cuz she shook me awake a few seconds later. i told her i had just had a really weird dream. then i woke up again, lying in the hotel bed, with my mom a few feet away still reading.

    tripped me out like crazy
