Ah, yes, King Crimson -- a stalwart in the genre of progressive rock. They are one of my favorite bands. 'Red' and 'Larks Tongues in Aspic' are my favorite recordings from them, although I can listen to any of their work at any time.

They've gone through various personnel changes over the years, but always, ALWAYS have top musicians and creative minds in the loop. In my mind, Robert Fripp is a musical genius.

They're not for everyone, though, and their catalog of music is quite varied.

What I've heard of King Crimson, I like. All I have (at the moment) is a vinyl copy of In the Court of the Crimson King, and I think it's great. It's very different from, well, everything. :D

I've got all of King Crimsons albums, plus some League Of Gentlemen stuff that Fripp was also involved with. I agree that Fripp is a very innovative musician and very underrated.

For what it's worth, I actually thought that their 1981 album 'Discipline' was their finest moment. It was made on the premise of seeing how far they could push the bounds of music and sound without the use of any synthesisers / keyboards whatsoever. Every sound on the album was produced by either guitar or drums. It was made in answer to the prolificy of the awful synthesiser based music that was in vogue throughout the early eighties. Even now I find it incredible to listen to that album and realise that there are no synthesisers or keyboards in whatever form used.

Add into the mix the incredible musicianship of the band members augmenting Fripp (Adrian Belew, Bill Bruford and Tony Levin) and there was little wonder that the album was so awesome. It's not to everyone's taste as it is very experimental, but the playing by all members is something to savour. I also have a live recording on videotape somewhere of them performing live on the Discipline tour in the South Of France. Hearing those songs live made them even more awesome !!

    nice post, Jester

I also enjoy Fripp's work with Tony Levin and Trey Gunn -- both masters of the Grand Stick.

Speaking of Fripp's side projects, I really like 'The Bridge Between' from RF's String Quintet, which consisted of Mr. Fripp, Trey Gunn, and the Cal. Guitar Trio. Some amazing work .

He also put out an EP with David Sylvian called 'The First Day' which is very good.

Nah, Yes is a far better band.

I'm kidding, I love King Crimson a little more every day.
The first album I heard was, of course, In the Court of the Crimson King, and I was captivated by the intensity of that kind of harmonic hug you can feel in some songs, such us "Epitaph". I can imagine they had bad times also, but when they were going through the path of ... divine inspiration (?), they sounded great.

King Crimson is really great. I really enjoy their first three albums, plus the Giles Giles and Fripp project that Robert was apart of before King Crimson. The new KC album, is really good, too. Eyes Wide Open is a great song... I like the acoustic version best.
