Ok hi guys im new on here and i figuered this would be the best place to post this ....

Ive been on the contraceptive pilll for about 3 months and i have some questions about it (my doctor wasnt very cooperative with answering questions)

ok first question is does it matter if you dont take it at exactly the same time every day? I think i was a couple hours late a couple of days and im not sure if it means anything ...

secondly is it safe to have sex with no other form of protection when u r on the sugar pills? I dont get my period til the tues which is like 3 days after i start on the sugar pills, and had sex on the saturday on the sugar pillls and my bf came inside me - is this a problem?

And is there anythin else that would effect the pill at all?

Im posting this coz im a stress head lol and usually have period pains and the like all day tuesday and ive had nothing at all 2day - i havent even had pms! so yeah im a bit worried and would appreciate any help you guys can give me :)

You should definately take the pill around the same time every day. An hour or so won't make a difference, but don't vary by more than that.

As for sex during the sugar pills, that's ok. That's when you have your period.

Sometimes Dr.'s prescribe birth control pills not so much for birth control, but for relief from bad periods. You should definately notice a reduction in cramping, PMS, etc. Also, your flow will most likely be lighter, and last fewer days.

As for anything affecting the pill's effectiveness, yes, there are some meds that will make the pill not work. Most antibiotics and some prescription painkillers can make your pill not work. Since you say your doctor isn't very helpful, check with your pharmacist before you start taking anything. You can also look here if you feel uncomfortable asking someone.

Very reliable information about medication side effects and interactions. Even told me I shouldn't eat grapefruit because it can interfere with the medication I take. The Dr. and the Pharmacist both failed to mnention that to me.

    Good luck!

My friend gained lots of weight from the pill, she said it's probably certain from taking it. Is this true? Or are less potent ones easier on weight gain?

Some people gain 5-10 pounds when they first start the pill, but then their bodies adjust and they stop gaining weight. Some people don't gain weight at all from it. I didn't. A lot of people gain weight on the Depo Provera shot as well, but I was lucky, it didn't affect me that way. Everyone's bodies and metabolism are different, so people react differently to medications. I might take something and have a funky side effect, but you could take the same med and be just fine.

ideally, you should take the pil around the same time every day to increse its effectiveness and also to make a habit of it, you know it can be hard to remember if you have taken your pill if you dont have a fixed time in the day

well, according to what the doctor told me when i started on the pill, i would be protected from day one. however, it was advisable that you used another method, such as condoms for the first month.
as long as you follow the instructions and take your pills on the correct dates and stop for your period and then start a new pack on the right day you'll be protected.
sugar pills are just a form of placebo...you're definitely protected during that week as long as you take start the next pack on the right day.

the only thing that i can think now that could affect the pill working is not taking it right. I had to take it everyday for 21 days, then stop for a week (where i would have my period) and on the 8th day start the new 21 pack (dont know if its the same for you) but i did everything as i was told and i never had any problems.

the pill actually reduces the symptoms of PMS or makes them non-existent. The only change that actually didnt like about the pill was an increase in appetite (i gained a few kilos) and i was a bit...lets say..bitchy?...mmm, perhaps hyper sensitive is the right word.

Antibiotics DEFINITALY make the pill less effective. You need to use another form of protection from the first day you take an antibiotic until a week after you stop.

Also, some prescription painkillers can make the pill less effective. I know for a FACT that Percocet can make it not work. Dr. and pharmacy didn't bother to tell me, I learned the hard way  . The Dr. at the abortion clinic told me about the painkillers.

If you don't feel comfortable talking to the Dr. or the pharmacist, check this website http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/Interaction/ChooseDrugs/1,4109,,00.html
It can save your life. It's very accurate, and I haven't not found a medication on the list yet. Even lists herbals, since they can interact with prescription meds, too.

Learn the facts about what you put into your body, and keep yourself safe.

Is there any way to predict what ones will make you gain weight or have any adverse effects judging by your build etc?

I'm strongly considering them once I turn 18 in a few months.
