Audacity is good for a free program, you may aswell check it out before you buy anything, many use it over the retail products, it's very easy, I'll get you a link in a sec
you play the synthesizer, eh? wanna jam sometime, and mayhaps record some songs over teh internet? :H
What do you want to use the software for exactly though? Is it for score-writing or for sequencing/recording? For score-writing, the best thing you can get is Sibelius- and I believe version 4 is out either now or very soon. They do eductational prices as well. If you want to be sequencing MIDI and audio, then I'd go with Emagic Logic. All depends really though on how far you want to go with it. If you just want to do a bit of MIDI sequencing then the new versions of logic would probably be overkill. Depends on your setup and exactly what you want to be doing with it. From the fact that you need help setting up your synthesiser I'd imagine what you want to do is pretty basic. To set it up, all you need is some power going into it, a cable to carry MIDI messages between the synth and the computer (the easiest and cheapest one you can get will go between the synth's MIDI in and MIDI out ports and the computer's joystick port on the sound card), and then obviously something to carry the audio from the synth output - either back into the computer, or two another recording device or simply just to some headphones or speakers. That should do the trick really. Then make sure your computer is set to use "MIDI Out" as the device for playing back MIDI sequence. You can do this in Sounds, in Control panel.
ph thank you so much..thats really kind of you. i have got the synthesisier working! i play violin voice guitar. i am a complete begginnner in recording and the only reason ive mananged to get the oppotunity is becuase a friend [with money!] invested in me. as far as i know, what i'd like to do, is record different parts to a song, and mix them together! see very basic. thank you for the link!
Ah well you'll probably want a microphone or two as well then. I recommend getting an SM58 - not the greatest mic out there but very reliable and also very cheap!
