Times were good in the 1990s under Bill Clinton. Since George Bush and the Republicans took over, it has been one disaster after another. Bush slashed government programs and gave tax breaks to his rich friends. He was determined to get even for his daddy losing the election of 1992. 9/11 may never have happened if Al Gore had become President in 2001. I believe brother Jeb Bush had a hand in the Florida recount. People around the world liked Bill Clinton and Al Gore because they were more into human rights and the environment. The Bush family of Texas was remembered for the Gulf War. When Bush 43 took office, that conflict was re-lived on television. Wolf Blitzer and Colin Powell reared their heads. An 80s revival followed. A Bush being in office surely fueled the hatred of Muslim extremists. To their twisted way of thinking, it made something like flying planes into the Twin Towers seem worthwhile. Now, we have gas prices that are unreasonable. $3.30 a gallon? It is insane! Bush hardly says a word about gas prices because, again, it is his rich friends in the oil business that are gleaning the profits. That money is going somewhere! I can not blame Bush for Katrina and what happened in New Orleans. But I do wish he would concentrate less on the Iraqi people and come to the aid of his fellow Americans. We have homeless veterans and panhandlers walking the streets right here in Nashville, Tennessee. Jim Colyer http://www.jimcolyer.com/news/ U.S. Presidents http://jimcolyer.com/papers/entry?id=50
Yeah, Clinton was real intrested in human rights, lets look at all the genocides he failed to intervene in. 1.Rwanda 2.Sudan 3.Congo 4.Iraq 5.Ivory Coast Am I missing one? Stop me if I did. Also, muslim extremists have always hated us, and one of their primary contentions is that we don't pay them enough for oil. If you want to appease them (for some reason) you should be glad the price increased. Don't get me wrong, I hate Bush... I'd say hes probably the second worst president we've ever had. Clintons the worst. Then maybe Eisenhower. Who the fucks he think he is?
Bill Clinton was President of the United States. He was not President of Rwanda, Sudan, Congo, Iraq, Ivory Coast or any of the ones you missed.
You said he was intrested in Human Rights, and I mentioned 5 genocides he ignored. You can't be intrested in human rights and ignore genocide, Clintons policies (or lack of) were responsible for the death of more innocent civilians then any president in US history. Where Clinton was from is irrelevant, the United States being a military super power, needs to devote itself to riding the planet of genocide in the 21st century.
are YOU fulfilling your "responsibility" then? Though those issues may be very important, which they are, the united states can't help other people with genocide if we aren't even a stable country in ourselves. The reason people are starving to death down in New Orleans is because of our lack of government support in the rescues. maybe gw should fulfil his "responsibilty" by the saving the group of humanity he is responsible for in the first place... But he'll probably just send the support needed because new orleans is close to texas.
what do you do to halt it??? edit....d'oh i should have read the rest of the thread.....to see this has already been asked
Thats a fair question. I've been donating $10 a month to Human Rights Watch for about a year now, which is a wonderful organization intrested in preserving human rights, I've also talked several members of my family into donating, and my old boss also gives $10 a month now. www.hrw.org I've also written the President, both my states Senators, and my Congressman, asking for humanitarian assistance in Darfur. You can get the pettition at HRW for the President, and I just reviesed it a little and sent it to my Senators. You can find out your senators here. http://www.house.gov/writerep/ Theres not much else I can do right now while I'm in school aside from droping out and joing the FFL, but I think that might be rash.
It is important that we prioritize. Right now we should focus primarily on Hurricane relief, but that doesn't mean we can't have other priorities, we still have the massive advantage of FEMA and the national guard for our humanitarian emergencies, and though it will take months to get everythign back on track, we can rebuild. People in the Sudan and Chad don't have anyone there to rush in and help... nobody will help. The United States can have multiple priorities... one near the very top of the list should be ending hunger and genocide.
now that we know what it's like to go through a disaster and to have so many people die, one of our concerns should be to heavily support the clean up of other disasters. it's the least we could do.
lodui's the man. good link. i've wanted to find more ways to give back now that i'm not living on ramen noodles anymore.
Um, wow thanks. But I really don't feel like I'm doing much at all, probably just a little bit to help me not feel as guilty. Of anything you could blame on the US, the most horrible crimes would be of inaction. Silent consent to genocide is just as bad as genocide itself.
absolutely. but i wasn't just referring to your donations link. i liked the case you stated here as well. i still get so chapped over clinton that i can't make a coherent sentence about why i'm so irritated. so i avoid the issue entirely.
Clinton was far from perfect I wasn't exactly happy with him but he did a far better job than Bush has. I do have a question for you ya'll. Q. What is the Clinton family Thanksgiving tradition? A.Serving dinner at a homeless shelter. Even before he became Governor Clinton would spend his Thanksgiving serving dinner at a homeless shelter. He did that every year as Governor and continued to do so during both of this terms as President. As far as I know he continues this tradition. The Bush family had Thankgiving dinner with King Juan Carlos of Spain.
