Sorry about the title, that's a scream of frustration... I just bought all new computer stuff... new motherboard, new processor, and new memory... I bought them together, so I know they work together, but I am still having problems. When I turn it on the green light on the motherboard turns on and the processor fan turns on but I do not hear it post. I have disconnected and reconnected everything and cannot figure out what is causing the problem. I plugged the monitor in just to make sure it wasn't just the little internal speaker that wasn't working (causing me to not hear it beeping) but the monitor says "No input signal". This is not an onboard video card, so there is a chance that it is not compatible, but I do not want to go out and buy a new video card when all I need to do is change a jumper or something. Oh yeah, the CD and DVD drives can open when powered on, so it seems like the power supply has enough juice, is there a chance that it is just strong enough to power the fan and the drives, but maybe not powerful enough to kickstart the processor? I used this power supply with my Athlon XP 1800 and it worked fine, but have now updated to an Athlon 64 3000. Does anyone out there have any ideas?
Is there an easier way to diagnose this problem? I don't want to buy a new motherboard or processor just to find out that it wasn't the problem...
Dude: Find some friends that are willing to turn off their computers for a moment and let you swap cards for a minute. If it posts and boots its the video card. If you try a couple of different ttypes and it still won't post or boot then you got a motherboard problem. I just went thru the same thing with my son's computer that I set up for him. I got a flow chart book and went thru the yeses and noos until we figured out the prob. Their are online flowchart books or you can get one for a few bucks at Amazon. Used it was like a 1.86 or something, like the postage cost almost as much as the book. Go figure. Hope this helps. It WAS his video card and his bro-in-law the computer guy with the Masters Degree that sent him the motherboard and video card and sound card. I am just a self-taught granny/geek thats into Linux. But I hang out with a young crowd as you can tell. Peace and happy building
How powerful is your power supply? (Though I doubt that's what it is; if it was the power supply, then your unnecessary peripherals like your CD drives would probably be non-working.) I had this problem a little earlier; I had just taken out my audio card to check the serial number, and plugged it back in. After that, my computer wouldn't even POST. I took the card out and plugged it back in again, and it started working again. My best suggestion to you: Rebuild it. Don't just go around checking the connections and making sure they're plugged in, just go around and unplug everything (one at a time if you have to) and re-plug it in. Perhaps you will find a problem if you do that; if not, then maybe it'll start working. And you could always kick it. But if it isn't POSTing, it's not one of your peripherals that is causing the problem, it's one of the more main internals, like the mobo, RAM or processor. Have you checked to make sure that the northbridge supports the kind of RAM you are using? (Dumb question, but worth asking I guess)
