Ok.. my son has terrible gas probably because of the formula (i wasn't able to breastfeed )and sometimes i can't get him to burp. I've bounced him around, picked him up and layed him down of course patting his back and all and i will do that for like a 1/2 hour and nothing. Now other times there is no problem whatsoever but when he doesn't, he is miserable and only sleeps for like 2 hours if that (he sleeps at least 4 when he can burp properly) so anyhow... can anyone give me some advice or help me out. I called the doctor and she said I could give him molicon (sp??) drops but I really would rather not have to give him medicine unless there is no other way. Your help is appreciated!
hmm...what a remember from having gracie and her gas problems....holding her a certain way helped...her tummy against my palm and her head over my elbow, and then just rubbing her back, so that the pressure helped...Also, baby massage is wonderful. Ask your pediatrician about it!
What kind of bottles are you using? I would highly recommend a brand called Dr. Brown's. The bottle prevents any bubbles from getting to the baby - we switched to them after I had so much trouble breastfeeding. Our in laws had a baby right after we did and she did not breastfeed at all, but the Avent bottles she used were giving her little one really bad gas. She switched to the Dr. Brown's and all the problems went away - no more fussiness, gas, etc. I know you can get them at Babies R Us, and even some Wal Marts carry the start up kits - but not many accessories (number 2 nipples, stuff like that). The Mylicon drops are all natural actually, you can give them anytime and they work almost instantly. Your little guy sure is a cutie, congratulations!!
thank you all so much. I will definatly look into the baby massage and those bottles. I have the ones with the disposable liners so you can push the air out but a lot of times there is still a lot in there. It also makes me feel better knowing the mylicon drops are natural. Thanks for the compliments also!
Try laying him on his back and gently pushing his legs in towards his tummy. Kinda bicycle his legs-ya know?
yup what sugr mag said is what i always did with my crumbcatchers,,,, in fact i used to do a whole baby massage thing withum a few times a day,,, tis nice time interacting withum and seemed to sooth them as well if all else fails tossum up in the air a few times or crank a swing super good n wingum round the bar
i don't like giving my babies medicine either, but my son needed SOMETHING (he was also bottle-fed after 2 months) so i tried mylicon drops. OMG what a lifesaver. One dose, and he was a happy little man. I think i actually gave him half a dose most times, and it was sufficient (because i warn you, sometimes you get a powerful *squirt* too, lol). For my daughter, i usually used watered-down teas in sippy cups when she was having problems. I think some mix of chamomile and anise or something, but my memory isn't quite clear on that.
Mylicon isn''t really a "Medicine." It works topically on the surface tension of air bubbles and NONE of it is absorbed by the baby at all. It is prefectly safe!!!! It does help some babies, other babies don't seem to benefit from it. Despite breastfeeding, two of my kids had mild gas (probably due to the fact that I was still consuming dairy products) and one had the Mylicon help, and the other one didn't. Use it BEFORE you expect the gas (if possible) you can give it, like every half hour if needed. I use it myself, for IBS, and I love it. (I use the gelcaps.) It IS really expensive, so try both the generic and the brand name. I found the brand name to be more helpful, but your baby might do well on the generic. Avent bottles also don't allow much air through. Also, don't wait until he is REALLY hungry. He should be eating On Demand, but no more far apart than every 1-3 hours. NO SCHEDULING. Let the baby decide when to eat, but don't make him wait too long, as he will gulp and swallow too much air. If this continues, talk to the doctor, he may be one of the 10% of formula fed babies who needs a predigested formula like Nutramigen or Alimentium. They are expensive as can be, but that's part of forumla feeding. The expense. If worse comes to worse, you can try to get donated human milk from a milk bank (it is totally pasturized and totally safe) or try to bring in your own milk supply, and bottle feed that. The rental of a pump will be WAY less expensive than predigeted formula, donated milk or even standard formula. I have a number of patients who do this, and their babies do REALLY well. (I though my first baby was "gassy" until I started doing doula work for formula fed babies. I realized what my babes were going through was small potatoes.)
