I can recommend Korcula, Rab, Brac, Hvar, Krk... oh what the hell, there are hundreds of nice places to go in Croatia... Dubrovnik is a must though. :)

Yeah, I've noticed that Croatia has become the new "in" place to go. It's getting lots of hype in the media over here (Sweden). First time I went there (spring 1998) most people here didn't know anything about it except maybe that there used to be war there (and when the bombs fell over Serbia in 1999, people asked me if my friends in Zagreb were ok...). At the airport they looked very suspiciously at my passport and I had to wait for 30 minutes before they decided to let me into the country. And now, I hear lots of people speaking Swedish (and other Nordic languages) every time I'm there (every summer, usually). Back then, I was trying to inform people, to let people know it's a great place to visit. But now, I'm kind of annoyed by the mass tourism. You get what you ask for I guess... What do you Croats think about this... lots of tourists = nice, or annoying? Both? :D

well, it's really a issue. lot of people don't like mass tourism, experts make plans to aim for ritcher tourists, but big problem with us is that we are loud but innert. right now everybody is in fact happy that country have any income at all becouse economy is totally ruined in croatia. first there was that damn war and then corrupt privatisations of everything. we don't have lot to offer to tourists except beautiful country and clear sea, so profile of visitors is predictable. tourists from all over europe bring their own food, drinks even toilet paper when going to auto-camp, so imagine reactions from local shops and restaurants.

as for that checking of your documents back in '98, i don't think it's becouse of your citizenship. croatia was popular tourist destination also before, when we were part of yugoslavia, and for decades. also there was never any political problems with scandinavians, not before nor now. probably some facial similarity was suspected for some wanted person so you was cheked (wow, i really messed this sentence, but you now what i think i hope).

Well, actually, they did act as if I was suspicious just because of where I was from. They were stunned by the Swedish passport and showed it to everybody else, and they asked questions as if they couldn't understand why I wanted to go there. When I told them I had a friend there (my girlfriend at the time, but I didn't want to give them the impression that I was going to stay a longer time, which I was), they checked that her name and address cleared before letting me go. In the summer, I also encountered some police officers in Rab, when arriving by boat from Korcula, and they were again acting like they'd never seen a Swede before ("Svedska eh? hmm..." *writing down all information in my passport*). The police in Croatia was crazy during that time (have lots of stories, but won't drag them up here :)). It got much better after Tudjman died though... No disrespect intended.

    peace,
    -Pat

answer to this can be only in quoted sentences. now when i think back a little, that was paranoid period - secret services affairs, tudjman losing his grip little by little, organized crime with state protection, lot of arms and trouble-seeking creatures - leftovers from war. and yes, first step to recovery and normalization by all means was death of tudjman and social-democratic goverment voted in 2001.

try to come again :) . millions of tourists was here this summer, and by the feedback everybody was happy.

Oh, I hope you didn't get me wrong. I've always had a great time in Croatia, and I return there every summer if I have the time. We go to Slovenia once or twice a year to visit my fiancée's family and friends, and we usually make a trip to the Croatian coast as well while we're there. This summer, we mostly drove through and spent only one day in Karlovac to visit some friends on the way to Bosnia, but last year we were on the island of Krk for a couple of weeks. I love the place.

    peace,
