Anyone else find that they use ellipses too often when having a conversation on AIM or some other such instant messaging service?
There are many times when elipses are the best reaction. JohnnyKickAss: Hey Lodui: What's up? JohnnyKickAss: Ya know if you fuck a horse with a broken leg, it'll grant you a wish? Lodui: ... Thats just one example... ellipses kick ass.
a comma is sometimes too formal, whereas an ellipse expresses an emotion or the sound of crickets chirping in the dead silent audience....
yeah, i use them. also on this forum too, i don't know why...I suppose it is more visually a pause than a comma. Maybe a longer pause; it also works for when you sorta trail off...
i was trying to make a dumb joke about a certain person that goes "blah blah blah,,,,,sdkfjasdkjf,,,,,," but it was dumb and not funny, lol.....
el·lip·sis ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-lpss) n. pl. el·lip·ses (-sz) The omission of a word or phrase necessary for a complete syntactical construction but not necessary for understanding. An example of such omission. A mark or series of marks (... or * * *, for example) used in writing or printing to indicate an omission, especially of letters or words. i didn't feel like arguing the typo angle and just answered since i knew what he meant.
it's the way I talk, if you rifle through my posts you'll also find that I'll spell dialecticly (sp?) from time to time to denote how I'm saying it, it demonstrates my rhythm of speech..... I mean without them most of what I said would have no rhythm, it would.... kinda suck...
