The government has decided to launch a new multimillion pound sex education campaign to combat the increasing spread of HIV. We will be subjected to the sight of LLCoolJ, Christine Aguilera and Ashley Judd (and other I presume) promoting a message akin to that unforgettable tombstone campaign from the 80s... Don't Die Of Ignorance (remember that?)... Apparantly, the government is so concerned that Britain's sexual health is now so poor that the only course of action is to resort to a campaign to "frighten and make people aware" that HIV rates are rising in the UK...

HIV rates in the UK are going through the roof... increasing by 265% in the last ten years. Before 1996, only around 50 cases of HIV infection in hetrosexuals were discovered every year... According to government figures published this summer, more hetrosexuals have been diagnosed with HIV over the past five years than homosexuals... Apparantly, out of the 7000 new HIV diagnoses last year, only 28% originated in our gay community...

    Scary?...

Well... according to an article in today's Guardian, it does not quite tell the whole story...

It would seem that 75% of the hetrosexual cases of HIV infection in the UK last year were either infected abroad, with 68% of them being infected by HIV in Africa... Apparantly, black Africans accounted for 42% of new HIV diagnoses even though they barely make up 1% of the UK population...

Looking further at the fugures reveals more. Last year more than 84% of those diagnosed with HIV in the UK, who had been infected in the UK, were still gay or bisexual men... Although they apparantly constitute 1% of the UK population, gay men account for 43% of HIV infections...

So... the campaign that we will be getting will be aimed squarely at the hetrosexual population of the country... yet the statistics would indicate that rising HIV in the UK is a black and gay phenomenon... why?... obviously the government is concerned that to direct the campaign at the black and gay communities would play into the hands of racists and homophobes... fair enough... but to redirect the massage away from these communities is resulting in some disturbing behaviours and producing some unbelievable consequences...

Yeah but how many times have you been told an absolute load of rubbish by a so called health professional? I have. They often contradict one other. If anyone is at risk no matter how small the risk, then they should take precautions and its irresponsible of anyone to tell them not to.

Political correctness has gone mad. I think the UK government should stop trying to be so pc and do what they should be doing to stop the spread of hiv etc.

I posted this once before but there's a very interesting debate about the whole HIV/AIDS thing in general going on ....

Several scientists are dispute the link between AIDS and HIV saying that it has never been proven and is largely a marketing scam by pharmaceutical companies trying to push out drugs. I'm not a scientist so I don't know how true any of the claims are but they still make interesting reading.

It also seems that apart from HIV testing possibly being inaccurate, AZT, the main anti AIDS drug, was originally a chemotherapy drug that has horrendous side effects and that most of the the 'cocktail drugs' do not do what they are supposed to.

It also seems that there are a whole group of HIV+ people around the World who are refusing traditional HIV medicine and surviving for many healthy years.

Gay and black people need to be aware of the risk - but so do straight folks, I very much doubt this campaign will be the end of safer-sex awareness. We should address the issues relative to black/gay individuals as well as straight guys and girls.

And I hate the 'pc' term, every hack journalist seems to want to use it for nefarious editorials.

I don't think anybody would suggest for an instance that the hetrosexual community can afford to sit back smugly... there should be a compaign for increased sex safe practices in the straight community... but you should also have side-by-side campaigns to pick up on the specific issues in the black african and gay comminities because it would seem that casual attitudes towards safe sex are certainly helping HIV infection rates to soar...

I agree to an extent, however the pharmaceutical industry isn't renowned for its honesty when dealing with the affairs of Africa ... and many AIDS related conditions can also be brought about by malnutrition caused by poverty. If the AIDS scare is big enough and HIV testing is inadequately administered, then there is a risk that the government will be encouraged to spend money on AIDS treatment rather than things like sanitation and food.

I'm not saying I believe all of the AIDS dissent theories ... but I do believe that we need to question everything we are told thoroughly, rather than just following each other off the proverbial cliff like lemmings.

A good point, but a different issue to the dispute about whether AIDS actually exists... the stance of "AIDS denial", for many years taken by administrations in southern Africa has arguably contributed to the pandemic of HIV infections on that continent, since prevention has not been encouraged and treatment has not been funded...
