Yeah, there's this policy somewhere in our school stating we can't have body piercings. I have my tongue, and can hide it from faculty members.. only ONE of which even CARES, everyone other teacher's seen it, and he told me to take it out, but its still there. Thank Jebus I don't open my mouth a lot when I talk. But, why can't we? So what if its someplace beside the ear? They're infringing on my right to free expression, and its bullshit. If I can't wear a body piercing to school, how am I to keep the hole from closing up? Considering how it takes up 1/3 of every weekday. They're violating my freedoms OUTSIDE of school by doing this, too, and it's complete and utter bullshit. Unconstitutional?
hmmm, that's most peculiar. Have you tried talking to the school board about it? your mayor or national representative (I dont' know where you are so I don't know the proper name for 'em). I know at my old high school, we weren't allowed to wear tank tops that had straps of less than two inches or so, but only one teacher ever freaked about it (and usually just on the girls with spaghetti straps, no bra, and no built in). Take it up a few levels and see what they say.
high school students have no rights..... look up supreme court precedents dealing with people under 18, you will not be encouraged....
You can always buy a retainer to wear while you are in school. Bodyartforms.com sells tons of different tongue retainers in a bunch of different sizes and varieties. I would recommend a retainer that is built like a regular barbell with screw on ends. the ones that involve o-rings are a pain in the butt, and swallowing an o-ring every other day or so is really no fun.
then get home schooled if it bothers ya so much...cause let it be known there is nothing you can to no matter how much ya bitch about it... just dont go around and show it to everyone and their mother... Edit: dont take it like i am being harsh or anything, cause it is crap and they should be worried about other things that what someone has pierced..but there really isnt much you can do about it, ya know...
I had my nose pierced in school and they suspended me until I took it out! My mother was outraged by them and was on my side until it looked like they weren't going to back down, even though I said I'd wear a plaster over it! Not long after girls were sporting plasters on various parts of their faces, but they weren't picked on - boo!
what about that supreme court judge that said the rights of students, "do not end at the schoolhouse gate"? if it can apply to their black armbands, i'm sure it can apply to piercings. i'd try talking to as many people as possible, and just keep going up the chain until you get the answer you want. then again, i had a similar situation back in high school, and my principal told me, in more or less words, that the county's handbook was of higher authority than the constitution. so, really, i don't know how that'll work out for you. but good luck! talking to people on an individual level might work out better, perhaps they'd be less likely to make you an example or whatever. you're talking about a public school, right? cause if it's private you're definitely out of luck...
The ACLU is the American Civil Liberties Union. They can't do much about anything outside the USA. There may be some sort of equivalent group in the UK.
Unconstitutional in-school? No. Unconstitutional out-of-school because the hole is closing up? Now, that is debatable. Not sure, personally. Your school is an institution and you or your parents have already signed the contract which puts you under the control of all those bullshit laws.
My school we are only allowed 2 earrings in each ear and no body piercings. I dont see why not? How is it hurting anyone. But its the rules. I just usually wear a small stud but i wear more than 2 earrings they arent that anal about the ear part.. peace chickens
The only rule in my school regarding any body modification is that tatoos that are "satanic(sp) in nature" have to be covered. Besides for that loads of people have eyebrow piercings and tongues and also noses too.
geez whiz...they should just make you kids wear trashbags with a paperbag over your head to school...since they are so worried about it... I am curious to those who arent alound to have piercings or are limited to certain ones, what is the dress code like, is it as refined and particular as to those with piercings and tattoos? personally, they should spend more time teaching and worrying about education then what Johnny has in his face or what Suzie is wearing...seriously... I remember when I was in school..it was way different...(but i know where you live and what school you attend also play factors..)
