I work in a filling station in Lincoln and we've got shedloads. They give me bottles of it to take home and waste. I don't even drive.

Petrol stations round our way are still dry. All the media does by highlighting panic buying is make people more likely to do it and off we go like sheep to the petrol stations.

The Fuel Lobby who organise these protests are part of the problem, not part of the solution. As such I think we should think twice before supporting them. They are calling for a blanket reduction of fuel tax for all drivers. If they were promoting a sensible agenda - encouraging higher tax on inefficient vehicles and selfish misuse of private transport; better tax breaks for cleaner and greener cars and fuels; encouraging more congestion charging and toll roads to stop people making unnecessary private journeys; encouraging better investment in public transport, it would be a different matter.

I would find direct action in support of a progressive agenda like this much less distasteful - as it is, TFL's groundswell of support comes mainly from the self-interest of people many of whom are the cause of the problem. Little if any thought goes into the wider issues. Protests borne out of self-interest rather than in support of the interests of others or for the benefit of the wider community I can't help but find quite sickening.

thats all very noble and i am in full support of the THEORY behind what you say... however... higher tax on inefficient vehicles..more congestion charging and toll roads will hit the poor and the teenagers just starting their driving careers. Hitting everybody and especialy those that are strugggling to keep vehicles on the road at the moment will NOT reduce the amount of uneccessary journeys made... surely that is a matter for education and NOT taxation? .... and if you are still finding other peoples views sickening..... can someone please pass that man a bucket..!!

It's quite clear that people won't change their comfortable ways until it is in their interest to do so. As for the poor and the young, I think encouraging everyone to buy more efficient and cleaner cars through tax relief is quite a sensible thing to do. Encouraging people to use their cars more sensibly, and to avoid driving where it's unnecesarry to do so is a far better option than encouraging people to drive more by reducing fuel tax with none of these other more targeted and fair measures being introduced. Targeting taxation towards irresponsible use is a way to make the whole system fairer for everyone - funnelling the revenue from congestion charging into better public transport is also a form of redistribution - those who can afford to use their cars irresponsibly are subsidising everyone else.

    Sorry....

I was not trying to insult you.. just i think a few of the groups you 'support' are 'groups with reactionary agendas' [an i would imagine other people view each others 'goups' 'reactionary' viewing them from there own different perspectives]. It was just ironic [i thought] that people view other groups in certain ways and don't see that there own groups are the same. I apologise if that came across as 'insulting' [though i am sure you did not know what the bloody hell i was laughing at]...
I thought you avoided this place cuz i smelled [phew my BO problems gone].

Firstly I don't believe I have ever expressed support for any group that I can remember ...

    Secondly:
    reactionary adj.
Characterized by reaction, especially opposition to progress or liberalism; extremely conservative.

Yes I have criticised groups with anti-progressive, anti-liberal and extremely conservative agendas, such as the fuel lobby. Perhaps you weren't fully aware of the meaning of the word...
