I saw this movie again today on A&E and I really like it a lot. It's one of my favorite movies based on the Vietnam war. Anyone else like this movie as much as I do?
I have to sit down with this film again and give it another chance. its not that i didnt like it, i only saw it once when i was younger. it was very strange to me, the atmosphere of it. and i dont know if i understood it either. its one of my fathers favorite films too.
I need to give The Deer Hunter another viewing. I liked it, but I didn't particularly love it. De Niro, Walken and John Cazale are all great. The final scene with Walken is very memorable. My favorite Vietnam movie remains Apocalypse Now though.
The first time I saw The Deer Hunter I was a little disappointed because it took over an hour into the movie before they went to Vietnam. If I had known that beforehand I would have liked it a lot more. The second time I saw it I could see what a great movie it is.
Most vietnam war related films tend to intresting if not materpieces, this includes the dear hunter, heaven and earth, born on the fourth of the july and etc. but i didn't like go tell the spartans and The green barrets i think the greatist vietnam war film whould be Apocalypse now
It's one of the only movies I bought on VHS, then DVD when it came out on that format. It's not supposed to be the best "Vietnam Movie". It's more of a story of how f'd up life can become for a bunch of small town hunting buddies when they're shipped out to a disgustingly sick war and what they will do to protect each other in that situation. I think the best way to understand the movie is to put yourself in any one of the characters shoes and try to think of how you would feel or what you would do in that situation regarding your closest friends. Or maybe I missed the point of the film.... Mau!
I loved it. the type of movie when i have to sit quietly for a while after and take it in. I found it different from the other great Vietnam movies, though not better or worse than Apocolypse Now (tho AN was def more of a mind-f**k) I also "got" it more so after watching it a second time.
Indeed. Apocalypse Now is is a permanent fix in my top 5. IFC has been playing Redux for the past month or so off & on late night, and I got trapped into canceling plans on a Saturday because I caught the first few minutes and couldn't get away. Besides it being a fantastic movie, if you've ever read about what it took to film it you'd have to respect Coppola & all the actor's endurance(s) just to get the pic even completed...phenomenal.
I watched it about a year ago, made a post about it even. It was very.. shocking in a way I guess. I don't know. Depressing definately, I liked it a lot though.
i'm gonna be honest with you. and i know i'm gonna catch a lot of shit. but. Does anyone else think that the idea of forcing someone to play russian roulette, yelling at them and slap them, is completely fucking hilarious? I can't help it but laugh when I see those scenes now, it's just too sick and absurd. If it's one of the intented messages of the film - that war is absurd - then I have to say they did a great job. "The Deer Hunter" was good, "Apocalypse Now" is even better.
