Destroy the Arms Trade! Day of Direct Action

Shut Down DSEi! 14th September 2005

DSEi (Defence Systems and Equipment International), the world's largest arms fair, takes place biennially at the ExCeL centre in London's Docklands, sponsored by the British Government.

Selling everything from battleships and attack helicopters to cluster bombs and machine guns, DSEi profits from death and destruction, draining money from public services and fueling repression and conflict around the world. This year DSEi is scheduled to take place between 13 - 16 September, but that's not going to happen...

This is a call to blockade the ExCeL Centre by road and rail.

Mass public action: occupy custom house station, 11am sharp!

We recommend you travel by Docklands Light Railway or Silverlink trains to this action so that you are already inside the station. Dress smart and blend in with the delegates! If you can't get there by train find another route...

    07950 691086

Destroy DSEi is a supporting group of DISARM DSEi. DISARM DSEi is an umbrella organisation and does not organise any protests. However their website at www.dsei.org has excellent resources for people wishing to take action.

DSEi 2005 is due to take place from 13-16 September at the ExCeL centre in London's Docklands. Selling guns, bombs, bullets and bloodshed - fueling conflict, repression, exploitation and war.

From Africa to Asia, America to here, you and I never see the benefits, we only bear the costs. The cost of the arms fair is phenomenal and paid for by us; DSEi 2003 cost the British taxpayers over £4 million. Just as money is drained from public services here to finance war and the arms industry, so is money diverted from food and water supplies, health care and other social programmes in poverty stricken areas elsewhere in the world. No food, no water, no education, no health care - but plenty of weapons. We pay in poverty, destruction and bloodshed whilst the rich and powerful continue to dominate, accumulating wealth on the backs of our suffering.

Governments and corporations use the arms trade for their own ends, with arms being sold to tyrannical regimes who 'protect' powerful corporate interests by refusing human and worker's rights, ecological protection and self-determination whilst brutally smashing social movements that dare to resist this oppression.

Our only hope is resistance and self organisation. People around the world come face to face with guns, bombs and violence because of greed and power, but rebellion is spreading. This is a call out for massive direct resistance to DSEi centered around blockades of the ExCeL centre using diverse and effective tactics in strategic locations from lock-ons to barricades including a mass public occupation of Custom House Station at 11am.

Every two years, one of the world's largest arms fairs, DSEi, takes place at the ExCel Centre in London. Arms Companies meet human rights abusers and warmongers from across the world to sell them weapons. And it happens with taxpayers' money and the active support of our government. The next DSEi is this September. Lets make it the last.

The hypcocracy of the British government is that while they are willing to send in British troops as part of a UN peace keeping force to places like Somalia, Sierra Leone and Bosnia, on the other they are helping to fuel such conficts by funding arms fairs such as this. So many British troops out there on peace keeping operations will end up getting shot by weapons made by British companies.

From what I saw of the demo it was a complete washout 150 people at the most and loads of unfortunate arrests. The Dsei delegates must have been laughing at us. Shame. :(

CW member reports back from Arms Fair-16th September 2005

The direct action day at DSEI was a bit of a disappointment, as an imbalance of class forces left demonstrators greatly outnumbered by the filth. Perhaps three hundred people turned out to demonstrate against the vile arms fair, and, frankly, they achieved little.

There was some sterling work done to bring much of the Docklands Light Railway to a standstill, and some people locked themselves down on the Silvertown Road. However, the arms fair went ahead with little obvious disruption. One female demonstrator was hit by an arms dealer, and a friend of her's, who captured the incident on film, had her camera confiscated by the filth. There are no reports of arrested arms dealers, though at least five protestors were nicked (though not in the incident I describe).

It is tempting to say that the pitiful turnout today was due to the G8 mobilisation and subsequent exhaustion. However, people have known - however vaguely - about DSEI for two years. A gallant band of people have put a huge amount of work into organising for the event, without much success. The shocking absence of demonstrators must, I feel, make people think about what they want. DSEI is one thing we can almost certainly win, to at least drive it out of London, if there's enough opposition to it where it counts, on the streets.

Hopefully today's rather dispiriting experience will not be repeated in two years time. I know a successful mobilisation takes time, energy & money - and a great deal of all three - but getting rid of the arms fair would be a huge fillip.

On to 2007 - and let's just forget today.

The same thing has happened with the anti-arms fair demos since 2001 and even before when smaller arms fair were confronted. Everytime there has been a very low turnout. What we need to boost numbers is to get the protest proffesionals like the SWP, Communist Party, TUC and the radical left of the Labour Party to back this. Even if we end up with just another massive A to B march around the Excel centre, it would cause massive disrupution to their arms fair if the march was big enough. You already see how much disruption to everyday life major demonstrations cause in central London, such as shutting down whole roads for hours. If we could have the same impact in the vicinity of the arms fair in docklands we would make a very big impact and make it clear to every delegate present that the arms dealers were not wanted.

    <Shakes head in despair...

The SWP and marching are about as effective as Geldofs' Live 8 on world poverty. All SWP marches are co-ordinated with the Metropolitan Police therefore would do nothing to disrupt the people who need disrupting i.e. the arms traders, but plenty to piss off the natives.

SWP raise awawreness by protest. . The sheer volume of people who attend SWP rallies and marches necessetates a well planned well thought out route... Liason with the Police is a requirement. Yes they have to sometimes alter their planned route on Police request but as the SWP's main objective is peaceful protest, a safe environment for all those who are protesting... many of whom bring their children along is essential. There are always the mindless few who hyjack these events with the sole purpose of causing unrest but on the whole they are well marshalled by the SWP.
The SWP are 'tolerated' by the police... well...only just. But without this liason no March would take place at all. There are weeks of talks as the SWP push for a route as close to the intended one as possible... not just in London but in any town or city that one of their demonstrations take place.
The SWP are probably the most effective activists due to their organisational skills.... and even if they do not directly want to be involvrd in a particular event they will give all the advice and support you need for a successful demonstration.
