Does anyone here like Syx? I have "The Grand Illusion" (1977) album. It's a good album but I haven't really listened to much else of Styx. I read once somehwere that Styx was one of The Smshing Pumpkins influences.
I liked Styx when they first came out. There first couple albums were good until Tommy Shaw left. When Dennis DeYoung took over the lead and came out with the Mr. Roboto crap thats when I left.
I only know them from "Babe". Erm... I suppose it's a good song if you like cheesy ballads. I'm not familiar with the rest of their music but I've been told they're good.
"Babe" was one of my least favourite Styx songs. I didn't like Dennis DeYoung much. He's not part of Styx anymore. I always preferred Tommy Shaw… Crystal Ball, Renegade, Fooling Yourself and Snowblind (with James young starting out the song). Much better songs IMO.
Some good guitar work on the Pieces of Eight album, "Blue collar man", "Queen of spades" The title song was pretty horrible though lol I never liked them high singing bands much.
You mean the ones with the good voices? I have to go listen to the title song now. I can't remember it!
Did they ever come to your town? I like Journey too. Another high singing band for Gongshaman! (I think he secretly likes the high singers.)
Lol Hey, I was into Journey BEFORE they got that high singer whats-his-name, Steve Perry. They were previously a much heavier band. I saw them in Denver '77 with drummer Ansley Dunbar, his last tour with them...incredible:2thumbsup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HAp-CsRsZ0"]Journey - Hustler - YouTube
That is different. Steve Perry is what drew me to Journey, so that's the Journey I know. We're at opposites. I guess I've always been into good vocals (not necessarily high, grittier voices are actually my favourite). I tend to be drawn by the vocals then get into the band's music, whereas you probably go for the music first. Instead of the vocals... we'll have to work on that. Maybe we'll do a Clockwork Orange. I'll have a look at my vinyl collection for all my high singers.
Ha ha! Steve Perry really is an amazing vocalist. Steve Walsh from Kansas is one of my favs too. I do appreciate good vocals, probably more so than I did in the past.
Ooh yeah, Steve Walsh. You have me humming Dust in the Wind. Nice harmony in that one, another thing I like in a group. You don't see it that often. I would have preferred Journey touring with Styx. Now Foreigner has the lighter high voice I'm not big on. But Styx isn't coming to Canada on this tour. Though I may be going to see Queen who are touring this summer and will be in my neck of the woods. No Freddie, alas, but the guy touring with them is a great vocalist too. They did a tour last year in the UK and Europe. Another high voice. I'm going to be on mission now to find them all, lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heumZu_A31Y"]Queen + Adam Lambert- The Show Must Go On - YouTube
