Snoods, hairscarves, help?

I need some help. As some might know, my mom will be undergoing chemo/radiation here in a couple weeks. She is really upset about loosing her hair. I want to try and find a selection of headscarves for her, but am having a really hard time finding something wide enough to cover her whole head. Everything is either silk (which slips off a bald head), or sequined all the hell!

I would like to buy something locally, so I can feel the fabric, but can't seem to find any Jewish or Indian or African fabric stores... any ideas as to what they would be listed under in the phone book or on the internet?

 

There is a fabric store in Nashville Tennessee that only sells African fabrics, it was listed with the rest of the fabric stores in all of the online searches I performed.

 

I can't find anything really in this area. What search are you doing, word wise?

I would really like to find a store that actually has them IN STOCK and won't require me to sew because I can't... lol... hems aren't straight when left to me.

I could order them over the net, but what is the point of living near a major metropolis if you can't find what you are looking for in said metropolis? Might as well be living on the farm if I am just going to order it, right!?

 

I think was doing a search at citysearch.com and I literally searched for "fabric" and that was it.... maybe i was lucky just because there was a store that ONLY sells african fabric?

 

i'd go with orering one offline, and if you wanna feel the fabric, find out what kind it is and go to a fabric store and feel an example

These doo-rags are pretty cool, and you can make them out of whatever you want. I made one for my dad out of camoflage cotton, he loved it.

My gram had cancer 4 times before it took her life and her choice of head wear changed alot. first time she got a great wig, the second time she made herself hats.

after that she just started shaving her head, I shaved mine too, so did my sister and a few of my cousins, but my sisters would take gram out and go hat shopping and my gram wore tons of crazy hats. when she passed she had over 200 hats.

I really wish that I could adopt a person with cancer so we could wear crazy hats together.

My gram gave me the gift of security of self confidence and I wear funky hats tams and scarves on my head all of the time.

use this as a gift. because wearing something on your head all of the time sucks and it is really hard to over come the social stigmtism of being bald. it really does suck. and I allways tell folks I see who are hairless who I see at work or in public that I LOVE there baldness! they usually tell me they are battling cancer. sorry I am rambling but I wish your mama the strongest healing vibes I can muster and send luv and hugs to you and your family

 

I talked to my sister last night, and she said that Mom is going to get a wig. Which is great for her. But, I think I am still going to get her a couple scarves, just in case she feels like wearing something else.

WeepingOak: Yeah, I get that about the self confidence. I would shave my head to make my mother's wig if I thought she would accept it. My Mom is very "proper"... and appearance means a lot to her, which is why the "hair issue" is so tough with her. My grandmother was like yours.... funky hats and lipstick and she was good to go, screw Cancer, it wasn't going to stop her from having a good time!
